Tick Trouble

Ask Papabear - Tue 1 Nov 2022 - 12:42
Hey, Papa Bear,

I had huge amounts of ticks on my head recently. Should I be worried? I ask because I hear ticks can kill via Lyme Disease/Meningitis and other ailments. I think I might have an infestation, which means I need Zyklon B to fumigate my house. Who should I call to put that chemical into my house, fumigator wise?

Sergie

* * *

Hi, Sergie,

Well, well, this is not the type of question Papabear usually gets, but I'll tackle it! Thanks for giving me something different to discuss.

First of all, not all tick species carry diseases such as Lyme Disease. Also, ticks tend to stay outdoors (preferring to hang out in underbrush in humid areas waiting for an animal to pass by they can jump on). So, it is likely you got them outside and brought some in the house after they pounced you.

If you haven't yet, get them off of you. Since they are on your scalp, you likely could use some help. Have someone get tweezers and slowly pull the ticks off one by one. Do not twist or break the ticks but pull them in a straight line out of your skin. Once pulled out, flush them down the toilet (ticks are tough and hard to kill by crushing or stomping them, so use the plumbing).

Ticks, surprisingly, do not live long indoors. They typically can't stand the low humidity levels and die within a few hours. So, you don't need to fumigate your home. Instead, go around the house and vacuum and thoroughly clean EVERYthing. You can do this with nontoxic treatments. Sprinkle table salt or boric acid in places you find ticks; spray areas (and ticks) with dish detergent, rubbing alcohol, or bleach (obviously, don't spray bleach on fabrics). You can also use a solution of eucalyptus oil and water (four ounces of water with 20 drops of oil) to spray inside the house. Finally, if you want, you can try Wondercide flea and tick spray, which is supposedly nontoxic. Keep spraying until you are free of ticks.

Next, you should fumigate outside near your house. Wondercide also makes a product for outside use that is supposed to be safe for gardens and yards. You can also hire an exterminator, of course. A more organic solution is to first remove undergrowth, tall grass, shrubs etc. from near your home and then treat the area with sprays.

There are several organic sprays that are good for outdoor use. Eucalyptus oil (as mentioned above), cedar oil, and neem oil (neem is a type of tree that has a natural pesticide property--Nature is so cool). Because ticks like warm, moist soil and shrubby areas, you can use something called diatomaceous soil to kill them. This is a powder made of dried diatoms (tiny plant organisms) that are so dry that when a pest like a tick encounters this stuff it basically sucks all the moisture out of them and turns them into tick jerky. Very effective.

Do not fumigate your home unnecessarily. Especially with some toxic chemicals. Try these natural approaches first.

Hugs,

FWG Monthly Newsletter: November 2022

Furry Writers' Guild - Tue 1 Nov 2022 - 11:00

Another month down, and we make it through to November already! I hope everyone found a great new furry book to enjoy during Furry Book Month, either through our novel bundle (which might still be up for a few hours before I take it down after work, so get in quick if it is!), or through the content we shared over the month.

We also saw Oxfurred Comma a couple of weeks ago. For two days, we shared plenty of writing advice and information across a wide variety of topics. Every panel is available for viewing on our Twitch channel, so if there’s anything you missed, or something you want to watch again, it’s all there for you!

For the first time, the Furry Writers Guild ran a novel bundle, with 9 books provided by guild members for purchase. The proceeds from this bundle will be shared amongst the authors, with the guild also taking a cut for fundraising. This bundle appeared to go well, with plenty of sales at the $10 minimum price – and above! Thank you to everyone who purchased the bundle – I hope you enjoy all nine of your new books!

Of course, we want every year to be better than the last. If there is something you want to see from Furry Book Month or Oxfurred Comma, we would be very happy to hear it. This can include ideas for theming with any future book bundles, as we are certainly interested in running more in the future. The Furry Writers Guild is here to improve the reach and voice for furry writers – please let us know how we can improve this!

Before going into the usual market updates, we have a new publisher to highlight. Blackwarren Books is a new furry-friendly publisher with a strong focus on LGBTQ+ characters and authors. They are currently open for novel submissions, and will be included on our Furry Markets Page going forward. Please check them out if you have anything ready to submit.

The short story market has not changed much in the past month, but there is one deadline fast approaching! Check out the open calls here:

Empire of Beasts – Deadline December 1st
This Is Halloween – Deadline When Full
Furry Femdom Erotica – Deadline When Full
F/F No Erotic Anthology – Deadline When Full
Isekai Me! – Deadline When Full
Children Of The Night – Deadline When Full
Furry/Lovecraftian/Erotic/University Themed Anthology – Deadline When Full
#ohmurr! – Deadline: Ongoing
Zooscape – Temporarily closed for submissions. Reoccurring submission windows. Re-opening December 15th

Several of our members also have new works released recently or coming soon. Please consider supporting them by purchasing, sharing, and recommending the following titles! Some of these might make excellent Christmas presents, after all.

Tales of Feathers And Flames, edited by K. Vale Nagle. Featuring short stories from multiple FWG members. Released October 7th.

Shapers of Worlds: Volume III, edited by Edward Willett. Featuring a short story from FWG member Jess E. Owen. Released October 12th.

Mage, by R.A. Meenan. Released October 31st.

The Way To The Lonely Valley, by Frank LeRenard. Released November 2nd.

When The World Was Young, edited by Madison Scott-Clary. Featuring stories from multiple FWG members. Released December 1st.

Don’t Ask Me If I’m Okay, by Jessica Kara (Jess E. Owen). Released May 16th 2023.

Thank you once again to those who participated in Furry Book Month and Oxfurred Comma. We hope you enjoyed the month.
Please send in any suggestions for what you’d like to see in the future.

Happy reading and happy writing!
Stay safe!

Truly Independent Animation

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 1 Nov 2022 - 01:38

Happy Halloween — and blessed Day of the Dead! At Lightbox this year we came across a new animated project called Stormfellers, created by professional character designer Brookes Eggleston. At their web site there’s a YouTube video detailing the genesis of the story, and the world, and most importantly the characters. Stormfellers are “A rough and tumble gang of misfits protect their island from the ravages of constant monster-like Storms. There’s Aecious the Storm Conduit, Quilver the Quilled Marksman, Glangor the Heavy, and Biko the Field-Medic.” Brookes has even created a plushie toy of Biko the healer. There’s also a whole gallery of character designs from this and other projects.

Was He Right to Kick This Guy Out of His House?

Ask Papabear - Sat 29 Oct 2022 - 16:38
Hey, Papa Bear,

I wanted to write this letter to inform that certain things have improved recently. As you can probably tell from the latter part of the letter, I do have issues to tell but things otherwise have improved in some meaningful capacity. I now have a volunteer job working in retail (food bank) and I’m really happy with the position and made new friends. Also, as of last year, I became an uncle. My sister’s baby boy is so precious to me. He’s turned 1 fairly recently and I cannot be prouder of him. I realised as I reread your response letter to me from 2020 that I’m simply not ready to be a dad. It’ll come unexpectedly but I only want to be the best I can be, learning from my own parents and of course, my nephew. But right now, being there for him is my priority.

Also, that horrible person who abused my mum was arrested after breaking AVO [Apprehended Violence Order, which is used to protect people against domestic violence] the following morning. I’m glad he’s out of my family’s (and my) life, but I’m left trying to cope with the last three years he’s been so abusive to my mum (and indirectly, my family). I was only indirectly affected (the night before he was arrested, I actually confronted the horrible man to get out and he did but I was terrified of him, I still felt the need to stand up to him and with a furious glare I told him to get out while my mum screamed at me to leave the room out of terror for my safety, but I claimed I wasn’t afraid of him, which was a lie), but the last three years left a mental scar on me which has left me trying to heal by talking with friends and being honest with my mum (also helping her with shopping), who finally cut ties with him for good. I hope he never returns as nobody in my family wants him around.

However, this is my question: was I stupid/reckless to confront him while trying to be brave while also trying to protect my mother and brother (he was also confronting him) knowing how cowardly and terrified I actually am, or should I have just not bothered out of a desire to live and to not be killed by that monster (he had no weapons but he was still dangerous having a terrifying abusive mental state)?

I understand this is a heavy question but I needed to know if I did the right thing. I have a disability (autism), but he has one, too, but that shouldn’t excuse his disgusting actions given how long this was occurring. Still, I don’t need potential PTSD in my life. A lot of horrible domestic abuse cases often end in either severe injuries or mostly death (I saw a lot of news reports of this and I hate how common it is), and I don’t wanna lose my mum due to my cowardice, so I had to be brave. Nobody got hurt physically, but I still feel stupid knowing he could’ve beaten me to death if he wanted to. The past three years have been rather traumatic. I just wanna know if I did the right thing or not. My nephew is one of my few bright spots in my life that remind me what is truly important: family.

I've really appreciated your helpful and kindhearted letters to me over the years, Papa Bear. I would appreciate it if you answered my letter soon.

Sincerely,
Sam the Dog

* * *

Dear Sam,

I'm glad you have finally extricated the problem from your family situation. It is a tough question you ask about whether you did the "right thing." If I were to give the standard police answer, then no, you should not have put yourself at risk like that and you should have tried to avoid violence at all cost, call the police, and let the police do the touch work for you.

In this bear's humble opinion, though, you did the right thing. You faced up to a bully, and he backed down.  It worked.  And you were brave to do it.  And if you were scared, that just means you were even braver yet because, you see, the bravest man is the one who faces his fears and does what needs to be done.  If you have no fear, then no bravery is needed.

Sometimes we have to dare to be brave because help is not on the way.  The police are often busy or just don't show up. Sometimes, as you might have heard, they show up at the wrong place and kill or arrest the wrong person. Work within the law, but don't trust anyone, including the police. and know your rights. Hell, one time, the police wanted to arrest my mother on suspicion of killing my grandfather when he merely died in bed of natural causes. And they treated me like a criminal when I was trying to report a car accident (one in which I wasn't even involved). Another time, my house was robbed. The cops even admitted they thought they knew who did it, but they did nothing, and when I went to report missing items at the station, the cop was more interested in talking to his buddies about his planned summer vacation than taking my list of items stolen. I don't have a great history with police, and that's coming from someone who has never even committed a crime except for getting one speeding ticket. Sheesh.

Did you do the right thing? Is the jerk gone? Yes. Is your mother now safe? Yes. Are you okay? Yes. Given the evidence, I would say, yes, you did the right thing. You can't argue with good results. You have a right to defend yourself and your family, and you especially have that right when you are inside your own home. The law is on your side in this case, most definitely.

This is not to say you should always behave forcefully. Sometimes the situation calls for it, sometimes not. For example, just a few days ago, I was at the library and one of the patrons was being forcefully removed by a security officer. He was kicking the officer and yelling at her, but I stood to one side. Obviously, people were already there to handle the situation, and if I had tried to help I likely would have just been in the way or gotten myself injured.

I'm not clear as to what the guy did, specifically, that caused you to toss him out, unless you had just had enough, but then you got the police involved and they arrested him, so all's well.

Again, take things on a case-by-case basis. You knew this jerk for three years, so you likely understood that he was really just a bully, and all bullies are cowards. You assessed the situation, faced up to the bully, got rid of him, and then reported him to the authorities.

You're good.

Hugs,
Papabear

Furries and Fungus

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 28 Oct 2022 - 01:52

Recently we made a trip to this year’s Lightbox animation industry trade-show in Pasadena, California. We met a lot of very cool and talented artists, including Shawn E. Russell. Here’s how her web site describes her: “Shawn is a wildlife and imaginative realism artist specializing in creating detailed depictions of animals melded with plants and fungi in symbiotic relationships… Shawn has worked with independent board game creators, food & beverage packaging, & private art collectors. She offers her personal work for sale online and at art fairs, comic/anime conventions across the US where she enjoys connecting with fans, collectors, and clients in person.” As you can see, the artist works a lot in highly detailed black-and-white. If you happen to find yourself in Terre Haute, Indiana, make sure to visit their personal gallery called Seek.

Same Canada?

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 26 Oct 2022 - 01:16

The Oates & The Elphyne is the interesting title of a new full-color graphic novel written and illustrated by Michael Walsh (Comeback). The description goes like this: “The Oates family moves to their ancestral home in Newfoundland following a pair of tragedies. They arrive at their Grandmother’s house, where they reunite with their orphaned cousin. Shortly after arriving, Beth, the youngest sibling, is kidnapped by a dark creature. Her older siblings set out to find her and bring her back, finding themselves in the Elphyne—a magical world that exists between the ordinary world and the afterlife. In the Elphyne, the imagination of children has the power to shape everything around them. The children, along with some new allies, must travel through the Elphyne to confront The Dark King, a mysterious being whose arrival has started to corrupt the Elphyne in frightening and unexpected ways. It is up to Beth’s siblings to rescue her from his clutches.” Not mentioned in that description is the fact those “new allies” include an anthro bear and a winged fairy. It’s available now in hardcover from Humanoids.

“What Is Furry Hypnosis?” Everything You Need To Know

Fursonafy - Mon 24 Oct 2022 - 03:19

Article Content

  1. What Is Furry Hypnosis?
  2. Does Furry Hypnosis Work?
  3. Who Performs Furry Hypnosis?
  4. Does It Have The Same Effects On Everyone?
  5. Where Can I Be Hypnotised?
  6. Is All Furry ASMR Hypnosis?
  7. Is It The Same As Erotic Hypnosis?
What Is Furry Hypnosis?

Furry hypnosis is a sub-genre of furry content that has recently seen a stark rise in popularity on TikTok which hypnotizes the viewer into something, whether this is to fall asleep or to believe they are a furry. It’s typically done in the style of your average ASMR video in which the speaker whispers into a particularly loud and noise-sensitive microphone and begins to assure you that you are becoming a furry. The hypnosis part of the video is usually achieved through repeating soothing phrases that constantly affirm the type of hypnosis the hypnotist is trying to achieve like “you’re sinking into a warm bath of sunlight, falling deeper and deeper into your sleep”, or something like that.

While this may just sound like normal hypnosis, there’s a catch. The hypnotist is usually a live, motion-captured fursona (now better known as Furry VTubers) who moves around and waves their hands calmingly, you know, hypnotist stuff. However, sometimes, the hypnotist is a pre-recorded video of a fursona playing over a separate ASMR audio, there isn’t a super rigid definition of furry hypnosis currently.

Within the sub-genre of furry hypnosis, there are further sub-sub-genres that attempt to achieve different things. As mentioned before, some may attempt to put the viewer to sleep but the thing most often associated with furry hypnosis is hypnosis that attempts to turn the viewer into a furry or an animal. They obviously cannot make any physical changes to the viewer’s body, but the aim is to give the viewer animal-like compulsions such as (in the case of a cat), licking themselves and meowing.

Does Furry Hypnosis Work?

As crazy as that last sentence may sound to some of you reading this, it’s yet to be proven/disproven because of how much it varies from person to person. It seems that people who are more open to the possibility of hypnosis are a lot more susceptible to hypnosis working on them. Some have reported feeling actual changes to their mental state after viewing furry hypnotist content such as getting the craving for certain foods or the aforementioned compulsion to lick themselves clean. Of course, “just trust me bro” isn’t exactly empirical evidence but it’s definitely a super interesting insight into the power of suggestibility in the furry fandom.

Hypnotic Furry Art

Who Performs Furry Hypnosis?

What probably also doesn’t help the legitimacy of furry hypnosis or hypnosis in general really is the lack of qualification required to proclaim that you are in fact a hypnotist. Literally anyone can set up a camera and a mic these days and make content. This is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, content creation is more accessible than it has ever been in history and can be done as a reliable source of income but on the other hand, it makes creating content intended to exploit people’s gullibility much easier to not only do but monetize as well.

However, there isn’t really much harm that comes out of furry hypnosis, so whether or not a person is an actual hypnotist is irrelevant. In fact, a lot of the furry hypnosis videos that you can find on YouTube and TikTok are made more to relax the viewer like any other ASMR video than it is to turn them into an animal. Some would even argue there is no such thing as a “real hypnotist” because hypnosis isn’t an exact science that can be reliably performed from person to person.

Does It Have The Same Effects On Everyone?

We hate to rain on your parade but furry hypnosis does not work on everyone, in fact, it probably works on such a negligible, small population of people in the world, that it isn’t even worth considering how many people it affects. As mentioned before, hypnosis is so heavily reliant on the degree to which someone believes in it, so, to convince someone that may believe in hypnosis a little bit that they are in fact an animal and they now have the urge to make animal noises and behave like an animal would be a hard sell.

Having said that, it would seem that there are varying degrees of success with furry hypnosis. While some have experienced full-blown changes in behavior, others claim that for a few hours after the hypnosis they felt “different” as though they weren’t quite themselves. Others even attest to experiencing changes in their perception, even seeing other people as furries.

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona Where Can I Be Hypnotised?

If you’re looking for a furry hypnotist content creator, your best bet is to look towards the YouTube channel furry asmr which seems to be a pioneer of sorts in the world of, as you could probably guess, furry ASMR. He has created over a hundred videos of varying lengths and has been consistently uploading since last year. His videos range from comforting cuddles ASMR to signing up for a furry convention ASMR. But most importantly he creates hypnosis videos as well. Other furry hypnosis channels include Darkwitt and Whispaw ASMR who make very similar content to furry asmr.

If you’re not in the mood for an hour-long investment of your time, there are also several furry TikTok pages that have recently been gaining some traction such as filththemutt which predominantly lipsyncs TikTok sounds to their fursona but has occasionally done brief furry hypnosis videos.

Is All Furry ASMR Hypnosis?

Furry hypnosis actually only makes up a fraction of the furry ASMR content out there. Most furry ASMR content is made to comfort or soothe its listeners, as for hypnotizing the listener, you will probably struggle to find a great wealth of content because of how niche it is. With that said, pretty much all content creators who make furry hypnosis don’t do solely hypnosis videos but in fact do general furry ASMR and occasionally do furry hypnosis as well. Because there is such great overlap between hypnosis and ASMR it’s quite easy for these creators to pump out videos for basically nothing.

"My artist worked tirelessly on my reference sheet despite several complete revisions of the piece" Craig Draw My Fursona Is It The Same As Erotic Hypnosis?

Considering there is a sexual stigma that plagues the furry fandom, it would be understandable if someone believed that there was some sort of sexual implication that came with furry hypnosis especially considering that erotic hypnosis actually exists.

If you don’t know, erotic hypnosis is a method of hypnosis used to increase sexual desires. What doesn’t help the case of furries is that, if you watch any of the furry ASMR videos mentioned above, it does always feel like there is some sort of inherently sexual undertone to it because of the intimate nature of the videos. Not to worry though, while it definitely isn’t devoid of sexual implications, most furry hypnosis has no intention of being sexual.

Those Were The Days, My Fur-riend.

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 23 Oct 2022 - 23:07

We came across an add for a new anthology of furry fiction called When The World Was Young. So we checked out the web site: “The invention of writing postdates, invariably, the invention of storytelling. After all, what purpose is there to writing, until you have something to write down? Excavate these writings, then. Decipher them carefully. Let them, at last, convince you to forget writing until instead they sit across the fire, speaking to you oral traditions, folktales, and of days long, long past When the World Was Young.” The book is due on December 1st, and proceeds will go to help various indigenous tribes.
