OffbeatrOffbeatr is a new crowdfunding website which allows erotic projects. (Pornographic material is prohibited on Kickstarter and Indiegogo.)

From Offbeatr's FAQ:

Offbeatr is a site that enables people to raise money for adult creative projects. [...] something tangible like a movie, book, game, or physical product.

Forbes magazine has a nice introductory article, and furries are already using the site.

The main steps to getting a work funded on Offbeatr are:

  1. Pitching to Offbeatr worker(s). If a pitch is approved by Offbeatr then...
  2. There is a "project idea" phase where registered users vote and give feedback to help project creators hone their project. If a project receives the minimum number of votes, the project can progress to the pledging-of-money phase.
  3. The project creators choose a deadline and a goal (the minimum amount of money to raise). Project supporters then pledge money.

Offbeatr's fees (20-30%) are significantly higher than its non-adult competitors, which it puts down in part to higher payment processor fees. Offbeatr also charges a listing deposit, which is lost if a project misses its $300–$30,000 goal. Funds are delivered via Dwolla or wire transfer.

Currently there seems to be four furry projects at Offbeatr. Two are in the Pledge phase:

Furoticon has a project in the voting/project-idea phase – Fantasy Sex Game: Furoticon Online – with 52% (523) of the 1010 votes needed. Onta's Unigan Caravan Print Drive is closer to success, with 194 of the 210 votes required for its smaller ($5000 vs. $25,000) goal.

Update (5 Sep): Unigan Caravan has been approved, and already has $3,920 in pledges with 28 more days to go.

Update (21 Sep): Inside the Candy Box reached goal of $2,275 on September 14 and ended September 19 with $2,390 in pledges.
Tendencies was unsuccesful and ended September 17.
Furoticon still in voting stage with 77% (786) of the 1010 votes needed.
Unigan Caravan reached goal of $5,000 on September 8, now has $6,825 in pledges with 12 more days to go.

While Offbeatr is less restrictive than the better-known funding websites, it still forbids several topics, including rape and other nonconsensual activities, incest, bestiality, underage characters, snuff and scat, as well as contests/lotteries, drugs (including alcohol), guns or financial projects. The site is currently accepting pitches from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, Austrailia, and New Zealand.

Well, I guess someone had to do this! Any Softpaw imitators will have to find another way to get seed money, though.

Curiously, the furry projects seem to be doing pretty well compared to their non-furry competition. Better advertising?

Or simply, a larger interested population to cull from?

"seed money"... you couldn't have thought of a better phrase?

On the contrary; I think it is perfectly appropriate in this situation!

(Though you cannot use crowdfunding to invest in organizations, in part due to rules regarding early-stage financing.)

I find it pretty funny that the furry projects are doing so much better than all of the other projects in terms of support and money. X3
