Anthropomorphism versus Zoomorphism?

Furry Reddit - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 21:48

I've recently been thinking about the term "anthropomorphism," which Wikipedia describes as "attribution of human form or other characteristics to anything other than a human being," and I started wondering whether any word describes the opposite sort of idea. After some thought and searching, I came across the term "zoomorphism," which more or less fit my criteria: Wikipedia describes zoomorphism as "the shaping of something in animal form or terms," and one of the several examples listed is "art that imagines humans as non-human animals."

I'm fairly new to the community, so I'm unsure how these ideas apply within the context of most furry art. Within the furry community, what is the practical difference between giving humans animal traits and giving animals human traits? How do the two relate?

Furfunding Week in Review 4-6-14

FurStarter - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 21:44

This week’s illustration is from the Kickstarter campaign for the “Animalia” playing card set.

A bit of a slow week in the world of furry crowdfunding, no projects really jumped out, so I took a week off to work on reformatting furstarter.com with a new theme that actually shows all the projects (instead of a blank screen, argh) and will help show off Patreon pages. It’s definitely a work in progress, but you can see how Patreon stuff will show up here–broken down by category, of course.

New Projects

For a “complete” list of furry/fur-friendly crowdfunding projects, check out the Project Page and Patreon Page!

Art

Rabbit Tarot (reprint) (Ends: 4/24/2014)
An illustrated, bunny-focused tarot, water color, very children’s fantasy style art.
Over goal!

Artworks for Plus Bodies (Patreon Ongoing Funding)
Furry art and portraits with plus-sized (but not unrealistic) figures by Michael Tangherlini.
Tangherlini is also working on an apocalyptic fairy tale RPG over on WordPress, well worth seeing!

Audio

A Different Animal (Ends: 4/22/2014)
Animal-themed instrumental/synth pieces by Camkitsune
So many words :)

Children’s Product

Cat Canyon (Ends: 5/4/2014)
Children’s book. Distracted, a child loses track of her family and ends up in a canyon of intelligent, internet-enabled cats.
That’s one serious wrong turn!

Comics/Graphic Novels

Sprocket! The Comic-Cat (Ends: 4/23/2014)
Sprocket, mascot of the Spokane Comicon, flies into action in his first comic!

Shonen King (Ends: 5/19/2014)
Shonen Jump manga parody featuring…puppies. So MANY puppies.
Lots of sample pages on their Kickstaterpage.

4-6-13howlinCostumes/Clothing

Eco-Friendly Vintage Tees (Ends: 4/30/2014)
B&W animal tees–the wolf and otter with guitars are particularly cute!

Film/Animation/Theater

Zoo University (Ends: 4/22/2014)
Sort of an animated furry version of “Animal House”? Which is ironic. Drunken college humor.
…halfway to goal. Huh.

Catladies: The Musical (Ends: 4/25/2014)
Political parody and constitutional cat lady lawyers in this NYC off-broadway musical
Looks like a bit of a non-starter.

MONKEY! (Ends: 4/30/2014)
A puppet show about the Monkey King! Not everybody can get to the UK, but you can see their work on Youtube

Bear Hug (Ends: 5/2/2014)
Live Action/2D story of imaginary friends, growing up, and a bear.
If this succeeds, I’m going need a box of tissues, I’m a sucker for “growing up” films.

Tabletop Games

Animalia: Tails Imperium cards (Ends: 4/23/2014)
Sparkling playing cards featuring chibi-ish and manga animals in a variety of fantasy roles
Over goal and working on stretch goals!

Evil Ponies (Ends: 5/10/2014)
Pewter pony villainy and horror for your tabletop mini gaming, from the team that brought you Pewter Ponies

Video Games

Flying Hamster II (Ends: 5/4/2014)
Newton the Hamster: swordfighter and dragon slayer! Sidescrolling RPG with a transforming, flying critter hero.

…Also by Furries

The Witch’s Kitchen (Ends: 5/14/2014): A cruelty-free cosmetics shop opening in Michigan, courtesy of Anastasia

…Meh

DogeCards (Ends: 5/4/2014): A kind of cute, kind of funny card game featuring memehound Doge and his transplanetary adventures. And cryptocurrency. Because nothing’s funnier than a product based on a meme.

…Coming Soon

Griffin Ranger: The Novel (Coming Soon): Check out Rgibson’s Video for his upcoming Kickstarter, “Griffin Ranger.” Birds with guns!

…Just for fun

Dancers of WAR (Ends: 4/30/2014): 3rd-person shooter featuring weaponized dance, the creator of Johnny Bravo and the founder of Depeche Mode and Erasure. There is nothing that isn’t awesome here, except for the long, slow climb to goal.

Furries at the VNV Nation concert at Slim's in San Francisco?

Furry Reddit - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 16:16

Hello,

I'm not a furry, and to be up front and honest, I just have no interest in being one. However, I have a question, and I thought I'd ask the experts about it:

Last night at the VNV Nation concert, I saw the usual crowd of goths, rivet-heads, and future-pop fans . . . and about six furries in the crowd as well. The goths and industrial fans I expected to see. The furries were a surprise -- and truth be told, one had some pretty good moves on that floor. :-)

So, is there a connection between Furries and VNV Nation that I'm not aware of? Please enlighten me, here.

Hi! I'm a newcomer to the furr community. (:

Furry Reddit - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 13:09

First, please forgive me for mistakes or if I violate any rules.I'm on mobile and I can't see the sidebar or type too well.

I don't really know where to start.I was introduced to the furry community about a year ago.Since then,I've had lots of fun making furry characters and I finally finished my actual fursona (a pretty kitty named Camisado ? ) I really want to find friends and rp partners in the community.I don't have any friends that are in it and my closest friend actually frowns upon it greatly. ): So yeah! I'm always open for a chat or rp! Talk to me and Cami sometime! (Or Avalon.Or Aviator.Or Cherí and Cherry.Or Jonas.Or Mallory.Heh I have a few :P )

I'd also like to state I don't fully understand some furry lingo and stuff.Haha,I really hope someone is patient enough to deal with my stupidity.:P Thanks to anyone who talks to or rps with me!!

Edit: Also,I decided to make another reddit account for exclusively fursona and furry stuff.Be on the lookout for FluffyFuzzyFurry lol! :P

A quick question...

Furry Reddit - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 10:34

Does anyone know what the stereotypical natures of whales are? I was saw thread a while ago talking about nature's and personalities, but whales can be quite uncommon, and I was just curious to see if anybody could possibly tell me.

Japan abide international ruling to stop whale hunting

Fursday - Reading List - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 10:05

In a statement, the court said that although Japan's actions could be described as scientific research, "the evidence does not establish that the program's design and implementation are reasonable in relation to achieving its stated objectives." It went on to conclude that the country's activities do not appear to be "for the purposes" of scientific research but something else. The annual hunts under the JARPA II program are widely seen to be intended for whale meat, which is sold to restaurants in accordance with the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) literature.

There was only so long Japan could keep up this charade. Credit to them abiding by the ruling and knowing when to quit when you are caught out.

Here is a good example of why Japan’s whaling is absurd: the government has to subsidise the industry because consumption of whale meat is so low it is an unprofitable venture.

What do you guys think of transformation artwork?

Furry Reddit - Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 09:54

I know that there are sites such as furaffinity that have both furry artwork along with other fetishes, such as transformation artwork (for a good example of a purely transformation-related artwork site, go to www.transfur.com), and I was wondering what my fellow furries think of this sort of offshoot. I for one love it, and find it almost more fascinating than anything furry-related (although I do still love furry artwork, don't get me wrong). Transformations of people into animals have fascinated me since I was young, and I remember feeling a sort of excitement when I watched cartoons and movies containing themes or transformation. I slowly started to look online around the age of 14, thinking myself weird for liking such a seemingly taboo subculture and finding a sort of arousal in it. With transformation art, I discovered anthropomorphic animal art, better known as furries, which fascinated me as well. I know that this transformation art is not for everyone, and after this overly lengthy and verbose rant that I just gave, I was wondering what you guys think of transformation art. Do you find it odd? Did it introduce you to furries? Did furries introduce it to you? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! :D
