"Why are you a furry?", or, explanations and understanding ourselves thread.
I had a conversation with another poster who was curious about why anyone could like furry stuff/porn/etc. They said furry/beastiality crossed their line. I typed up quite a long response talking about myself and furries in general and wondered if it would be a good idea to post it here :) I always like hearing people's stories and digging through reasons why people do things. IF THIS IS AT ALL INAPPROPRIATE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL TAKE IT DOWN.
"As for myself, any number of things in my past could have had a part in influencing my sexual interests. Growing up, I watched a lot of bugs bunny cartoons. My first game I ever played was Sonic the Hedgehog. Heck, the first story/game I got heavily into was Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. That game was a big deal to me. I always REALLY got lost in the feel of the worlds, characters, voices, and music. Maybe it's that they were running around with no pants on. Or that if you're young and playing a game with a chick in a short skirt, you're gonna wanna pan the camera to look up it. And I just got the furry luck of the draw.
That's not to say that I can exactly pinpoint those things to be THE THING that did it to me. Just ideas. I know it's a very common fetish to see catgirls or chicks wearing ears like that. Hell, look at Playboy. Those are bunnygirls and Playboy's one of the biggest deals in porn. I don't remember ever seeing Playboy mags growing up, but it's hard not to see that logo or see the costume and get turned on. I just saw it for the um... playful cute animalistic fuck machine side of it. Getting to the point though. Do you think a chick wearing cat ears and a tail sounds sexy? That's sexy to me. Also the idea of wearing paws. Maybe, she's got fluffy sleeves or knee-highs on? Maybe even a cute blue or green color? Her tummy is soft colored compared to the color of a cartoony animal, not too far off. Button noses are cute too! If they can be cute, why not sexy? To the right kind of person, of course.
Let's see... there's also just being into drawn stuff in the first place. Was 15 and heavily into hentai. I've heard some dudes who thought furries were weird, and when asked about drawn stuff they were like, "I think fapping to cartoons is weird. I want to look at REAL WOMEN." So there's another look at it.
I like the colors and cuteness and transformation and fantasy and well... it's just normal to me. If it helps, I would consider myself a normal functioning person in society. I don't wear the fur flag when I go out. I only talk to people who I COMPLETELY trust to know the information. If anyone who didn't know what's up got onto my computer they would probably freak out lol."
Thanks anyone who read this. Feel free to discuss your own stories. :3 thank you!

What Ever Happened To One Eyed Doe?
The greatest fursuit maker that never was. Why did she quit making custom suits? They were so perfectly proportional. The best partial suits I have ever seen! But she doesn't make suits anymore! She just sells premade ones. They are like this gem that people are lucky to have. I really wish she would go back to making custom suits. They are the perfect partial

Help! I don't know how to be a Japanese Sushi Spirit Cat!
Hi!
So it's Monday, and while I'm about to sleep in a few hours due to my whacked out work schedule, I thought it'd be cool to ask for some help concerning a fursona I'm working on.
I recently adopted this lovely sushi cat (picture slightly edited to be SFW) as part of a fundraiser to help some dogs. She's apparently some sort of Japanese spirit thing with a sushi theme.
However, I know next to nothing about Japanese spirit things. I've also never been a cat before. So I'm open to ideas and suggestions concerning Japanese spirits or just general cat stuff.
So, /r/furry, any thoughts? Also, if you've ever had problems developing a character, drop a comment and maybe we can hivemind for you.

Two Decades of Dreamworks
This year Dreamworks is celebrating 20 years of animation on TV and the big screen. Among the signs of the celebration is The Art of Dreamworks Animation, a new hardcover book edited by Ramin Zahed. It’s available later this month from Abrams Publishing. “Brimming with concept art, preproduction designs, and character sketches, DreamWorks Animation marks the studio’s 20th anniversary and offers unprecedented behind-the-scenes access into its archives. An introduction by DreamWorks cofounder Jeffrey Katzenberg provides insider perspective on the studio’s most popular films, as does running commentary from artists and directors on all of DreamWorks’ 30 films to date.” By which they mean films like Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon. Order it now at Amazon.

Anthropomorphism versus Zoomorphism?
I've recently been thinking about the term "anthropomorphism," which Wikipedia describes as "attribution of human form or other characteristics to anything other than a human being," and I started wondering whether any word describes the opposite sort of idea. After some thought and searching, I came across the term "zoomorphism," which more or less fit my criteria: Wikipedia describes zoomorphism as "the shaping of something in animal form or terms," and one of the several examples listed is "art that imagines humans as non-human animals."
I'm fairly new to the community, so I'm unsure how these ideas apply within the context of most furry art. Within the furry community, what is the practical difference between giving humans animal traits and giving animals human traits? How do the two relate?

Furfunding Week in Review 4-6-14
This week’s illustration is from the Kickstarter campaign for the “Animalia” playing card set.
A bit of a slow week in the world of furry crowdfunding, no projects really jumped out, so I took a week off to work on reformatting furstarter.com with a new theme that actually shows all the projects (instead of a blank screen, argh) and will help show off Patreon pages. It’s definitely a work in progress, but you can see how Patreon stuff will show up here–broken down by category, of course.
New Projects
For a “complete” list of furry/fur-friendly crowdfunding projects, check out the Project Page and Patreon Page!
