Do you guys know of any furry anime with mainly adult characters?

Furry Reddit - Thu 27 Feb 2014 - 02:07

I freakin' love Polar Bear Cafe and was wondering if any of you guys new of any other animes with furry main characters that aren't written and produced with kids as the target demographic.

Webcomics: It Came from Patreon

FurStarter - Wed 26 Feb 2014 - 22:22

Illustration by Not-Fun, whose webcomic “Inhuman” is currently crowdfunding on Patreon.Thank you, Icarus!!

Greetings from Patreon! Land of trickle-funding and micropayments, where full digital art spreads bring in $3 and pony videos $550…if you have a nice British accent.

Joking aside, Patreon is proving to be a go-to source for content providers, a low-key and low-pressure fundraising tool for artists, who as a category seem to err on the side of low key and low pressure–fundraising without stress (and, frequently, without any sort of campaign, but let’s not go there just now.) It’s a good home for webcomics in particular, where ongoing plots and slow-growing fan bases can turn into a gentle stream of pennies. Here’s a few recent gems.

It’s about aliens and schizophrenics. You should read it!” – Not-fun

Icarus’s “Inhuman” is an elegant sci-fi world, a slow-building story in the distant future, with expressive humans and a wide range of aliens (the four-legged polar bear taur-esque Nikitak may be some sort of Progenitor experiment in weaponized cute). Patreon-Inhuman-CatIt’s been running for over a decade now, rolling out a tale of exploration and identity against the backdrop of a powerful religious state spreading its tendrils across the planets. It’s a mature and thoughtful web series, and while it’s thick with damnably adorable critters, Inhuman is, at heart, a story of what it means to be human.

Patreon
“…science fiction with both humor and horror, drama and adventure, and romance and redshirts getting eaten by space monsters.” – NixieSeal

On the other end of the “whimsical sci-fi romp” continuum, Anthronauts, a weeklyish webcomic, a bit sci-fi and a bit space-fantasy running a bit over a year, is a silly, Anime-inspired romp through furryspace, I’m still working my way through the series, but we’ve come across a few characters, somewhat “stock” but well-used–the bishonen unicorn captain (or space knight?), anthronuats2bookish and dedicated scientist. Unfortunately flipping through the comic is a bit of a trick, the web interface is just a bit buggy, but NixieSeal’s world is cheerfully perverse.

Page one: “Father, you look unwell. As much as I enjoy slicing your limbs off, I’m starting to worry about your health.” It gets weirder from there.

poppyiconPoppy O’Possum by Morbi
Patreon
“.It’s a goofy fantasy story about a single mother with super strength and big thighs. Yep.” – Morbi

Interesting, I thought “Poppy” was a down-to-earth story about a swamp possum trying to survive the challenges of being a single mom and living, well, in a swamp. As it turns out, there’s a little bit of sci-fi in this one too, since Poppy’s on another planet, “Flora,” which is a bit of a hellhole (though the Fenneclands there sound supercute.) There’s touches of magic and fantasy in the series, but it’s still, at heart, a mom and her daughter against the world. morbiYeah, it’s a world with perverse and dotty cat-nuns and such. I do like the way the fantastic elements take a back seat to character development and loving mayhem. They’re there, lurking in the background–and Poppy herself seems to be the only nonmagical character in the series, with a certain increased mortality because of it. She’s an outsider, a charming brute in a somewhat fussier world, maybe a little more at home wrestling an alligator than dealing with tea and fine dresses, but Poppy’s a winning character throughout.

[Discussion][Update] A tale of ref sheets.

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Feb 2014 - 21:40

A while back, my partner posted a thread about not receiving art after nearly five months of waiting. I wanted to bring up the discussion again, as well as tell the full, updated story.

Note I will not be posting any names of the people in question to keep their anonymity, and to possibly prevent any backlash on the artists I talk about here. Only their gender pronouns will be kept.

Over five months ago, I commissioned an artist to do a ref sheet of my then (and kind of still now) new character. I asked her ahead of time if everything was cool, it got apporved, I paid, and watched her art queue (which is buried in her journals) to see when I would finally hit the top and know my art was getting done. I can't remember exactly when I got to the top, but it was definitely early December for sure. I kept sitting there, waiting for updates or even notes with WIPs, but nothing came. I kind of chocked it up to the holidays being stressful and taking breaks to be with family, those sorts of things. Then I had read a journal she posted about having difficulties doing art, etc. and I was okay with it, but when early January rolled around and she had said she would get to work on it, it still felt like she was lagging behind or just not really doing anything.

Apparently, she posted another journal where she was getting upset with people stealing or copying her profile theme. I mean, was it really that big of a deal? To her it was, but some people get overly attached to certain things. Also, she was still doing art for friends during the time that she was supposed to be working on my commission. I know it's hard when you're just working with unformed ideas to develop a look, but it would have been nice just to get a heads up, like "hey, I'm still having kind of an art block, do you mind if I do some other art to help me out of my rut?" I had even noted her a couple times to just ask about a status, nothing too invasive or naggy, just asking about where things were going. It was at this point I contacted an artist I had commissioned before.

The other artist had done a commission I got for my partner and it was splendid, better than what I would have imagined for the price, and even did a ref of my partner's character just earlier. I contacted her and asked if she would do the commission as I was having difficulty with the original artist. She was very friendly and told me that she had been having issues with her art as of later due to real life, but would still take on the commission with a possible expected return of about one month. She even let me not pay until she sent a rough sketch. Eventually, the original artist got the first WIP to me in early February, and I was in the mood to just get it over with. I became a 'yes man' in approving every WIP she sent and got the finished commission less than two weeks ago.

When I first saw the ref sheet, I was pretty "meh" about it, but in the past couple days I've gotten to like it more. I like the colors of my character and even got a couple commissions done of her. She's a cutie, and I can't deny that. However, I got the WIP from the newer artist this morning. She apologized for the lateness and even said that if I wanted, I could keep the sketch for free and just not pay for the commission. I honestly was moved, but knowing how good their art was I couldn't back down from letting it not finish. I told her I would gladly pay for the commission, add a detail that I liked on the original artist's design, and use the color design of the original artist. She agreed and was so happy to know that I was being super supportive of her and even giving a tip to her. She has let me know that the finished piece might be done tonight, but I'm cool with it being done anytime since I know she'll get it done as soon as she can.

Now, onto the discussion. How long is too long for you? Have you ever gotten art where you were like 'meh' but later turned around and went, 'yeah, it's pretty good/cool'? Any other comments?

Anyone make one yet? The new patch came out and I have an itch to experience it. But I don't want to go out alone, and I'm really rusty. Looking for more 'noobs' like myself. ;3

What's the furry community like in your area?

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Feb 2014 - 15:30

I feel lucky to live in an area with an active furry community (shoutout to anyone in or around Delaware, USA, check out thefurststate.com!). I am curious about local groups in other areas!

Do you have a local furry community? What's it like?

Art challenge: a wild teddy bear?

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Feb 2014 - 15:05

Sometimes I'm a mix between a wild bear and a teddy bear (so says my wife). I'm not an artist, but I thought it might be a fun thing to visualize and draw? I'm wondering what you would come up with!

...hope that's an ok thing to post. I might commission someone in the future, but I don't even know what I'd be asking for yet.
