Furfunding Week in Review 12-8-13

A bit of a slow week in furry crowdfunding this time around, with a few gems coming in on Saturday and Sunday–in particular, Rizzo Michelle’s art doll ponies, and Zodion, a sci-fantasy reimagining of the Zodiac.

To fill the aching void left by sudden appearances of wolf-people on Offbeatr, the staff at Furstarter spent some time fleshing out a Resource page, with suggestions for new crowdfunding campaigns and “unbiased” (hah) comparisons of the various crowdfunding platforms. Hope someone finds these useful, and feedback is appreciated!

Maybe I'm just having horrible luck, but Amazon and even Google aren't showing the results I want. Where on earth can I find those big jinglebell-type bells that clip onto collars that I've seen for neko girl cosplay? I have one as a keychain, and one of my friends wants one for Christmas, and as I cannot spawn the vendors' hall at Anime Expo into existence on a mere whim, I desperately need your help!

It doesn't matter if you joined in 2012 or in 1992, I'm curious what changes you've noticed. If possible, focus on the positive!

For me, I joined in the mid 90s. Obviously it's bigger, there's less of a 'small community' feel where everyone knows everyone, and I've noticed that regional communities have taken on their own local customs and opinions on what the fandom 'is' where it used to seem that no matter where you lived most people had a similar idea of what being furry is.

Also...I get that for many it's a hobby and that there is no 'community.' Your opinion matters too, but I'm mostly curious about those who consider furry a big part of their lives.

One more interesting thing I noticed. Many of the 'growing pains' (cliques, drama, importance of art or fursuiting, etc.) seem similar whether it's new to the area or old. ie. many of the things that happened in my local community I saw happening in Brazil when I visited furs there, only I first saw them in the 90s, and the relatively young community in Brazil experienced them in the 2010s

TL:DR - I find the changes people see over their time in the fandom interesting and am curious what people have noticed themselves since they joined.

Okay, I'll start this off by saying this isn't really related to furry, so please ignore and move on if you don't care. The mods will probably hide this for the same reason, but I only really have 2-3 days to finish this.

So, story goes like this, my dad buys things for himself because he sees a new shiny thing he likes (Which in this story is an iPad air) and he uses it. Turns out, he doesn't want it and passes it to my mother, who has never asked for it, and even specified that the iPad air would be only for him and him only(because she knows that he does stupid shit like this.) My dad is now furious for some reason after a trip with my grandmother and my mother, and is now requesting(ordering) my mother to sell of the iPad air. And fast. My dad always likes to buy and sell things and cause huge losses to our family and then blames it on us(Mother, Me, Brother.) And we can't talk back to him because he's well, father.

My mom only knows one person she can sell it off to, but she'll be making a huge loss of $600. So i'm coming to you, /r/furry (because I'll probably get ignored and screwed over in other, bigger subreddits) to ask if any of you would like to purchase a one month old iPad air, 16GB, Wi-fi Cellular, painted black for about $800. It has a Leather Casing costing $118. Shipping will be the buyer's side to pay, and the pricing will be told through Private Messages. We'ld obviously still be making a loss of $200+, but at least it won't be as crazy as $600.

(No, this isn't life and death horrible help needed, which is why i stated the title as slight help needed. I don't need comments telling me that my situation isn't as bad as their life.)

A constellation of animal imagery from an alternate future. Not your grandmother’s zodiac.

Because I’m about to spend 200-300 words gushing over this project, I’ve got to get this out of my system: “Zodion” is just a bit snickerable, so far as names go. It puts me in mind of a prescription painkiller. There, I’ve said it, I can move on now.

When she’s not creating names for Big Pharmaco, artist Tori Meader illustrates the stars.

Or at least, the zodiac. Possibly zodiacs.

Meader’s project, recently launched as a two-week blitz campaign on Indiegogo, is a richly-colored fantastic/futuristic vision of the zodiac’s sparkling cast of characters. It’s remarkably fur-friendly, or at least animal-lover friendly. In addition to reimagining the twelve starsigns as technobionic mixtures of organic and electronic (and electroluminescent) elements, crafting personalities for them, and illustrating them in amazing and rich color, she’s also taken the liberty of arting away the human elements. Her zodiac vision is fresh and amazing–but I am going to miss the centaur.

Meader’s intent is a complete revision of a stale zodiac filled with critters and symbols from dusty myth, livening up the starsigns with new imagery and freedom for personal interpretation. She’s off to an amazing start, though purists may find it hard to relate to her imagery. I’m reasonably with-it on my mythology, and had to check the filename to figure out what the hyena represented. It’s Sagittarius the Archer, and except for a certain warlike attitude and sense of speed and motion, the original’s been completely subsumed into Meader’s world. I’m okay with that, though, I really like hyenas.

As for the project itself, It seems like a sound one–enough funding to launch and sustain a web-based store for a year or two. Lots of prints and stickers and such for supporters, with tribal reinterpretations of the zodiac glyphs and Meader’s unique cosmos critters as well (all of which you can find on the Zodion gallery). Stretch goals? There aren’t any…yet, and with a slow start and tight deadline this might not be the campaign for them. But after setting her sights to the stars Meader’s thinking of turning to the other zodiacs. I look forward to seeing what her brush will do with the Chinese starsigns.

I’m also willing to model for “dog” if she needs the help. Call me.
