Just so you know, "Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time" is raccoon approved

Furry Reddit - Thu 14 Feb 2013 - 22:56

So the new sly game is out. There's been like, no advertising for this game at all, which is a shame because every it's obvious in almost every aspect of this game Sanzaru have poured their heart and soul into this game, and it shows. They had big shoes to fill leftover from Sucker Punch and boy do they fit nicely. But I am biased, as you can see.

I've seen it get really good reviews (1, 2) and also middling reviews (1, 2).

The common complaint from the lower score reviews is that the game doesn't do much to advance the formula. I kind of agree, with the game taking most of it's design choices from Sly 2: Open explorable worlds, getting to play as Murry, Bently, and other characters, searching for hidden bottles, and running treasure back to your hideout before time runs out. But I really think these executed very well, and the fantastic art, audio, a characterization just adds to it even more to elevate this game out from "just another platformer" land and IMO better than Sly 2 as well.

Each time period you visit (I think there's 5, I'm on the 4th one) has you meeting a new Cooper ancestor (who you get to play as and has their own unique abilities), getting you a new costume (which give Sly new abilities, letting him access secret areas in other time periods), and fighting new enemies and a boss. The Cooper's are characterized really well, and it's hard to pick a favorite. The bosses are also have some amusing backgrounds and quirks . Each level/chapter is presented as a cartoon "Sly And The Gang In...." which an extremely well done flash animation reminiscent of the animated intro. There's at least 3 of these per section which give background info on the boss and cooper relative of that era and are awesome to see.

Graphically the game is a treat as well. Character and level design are stuff I'd expect from a Dreamworks movie. There's so much attention to detail, from cave paintings depicting a story to showing how Rioichi Cooper invented sushi. Oh also, playing in 3D is awesome too.

The audio is great, the music is great (there's era appropriate music with the familiar sly theme snuck in real well), the dialogue is amusing but there were a few times I actually laughed out loud.

My only real complaints are I wish you got more missions with the ancestor coopers, if not just for more dialogue, because their special powers are pretty cool and it kinda sucks only getting to really use them in a couple missions. Also, fighting enemies is kinda meh. There is a bit of a method to using stuff like flash bombs or combos, but mostly you can just sneak up behind them and hit a special combo to instakill them. Which is nice but removes some of the challenge from the game. and there is this which I'm not sure what to make of.

Also sucky is that Sony dumped Sanzaru after publishing this, so unless Sucker Punch is back on the Sly IP, I don't forsee a sequel.

Also remember, this is a "cross buy" game, meaning you get the Vita version (which is identical, basically) in addition to the PS3 game both for $40.

If you want a game that reminds you why PS2 era platformers were so great, or if you have a stripy tail, then you should get this game.

Definition of Anthropomorphic

Furry Reddit - Thu 14 Feb 2013 - 06:06

Just a little PSA here.

Remember that Anthropomorphic means giving human-like attributes to non-human things. This means that not only is Bugs Bunny a 'Furry', but so are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Balto, and Buttons (Mindy & Buttons from Animaniacs).

Furries don't have to be standing on 2 feet to be considered Furries. Nor do they need to have actual FUR or hair. The old school term for what is now known as Furries was 'Funny Animal', which got used to describe old cartoons and news paper comics with Furry characters.

Also of note, that Anthropomorphic things don't have to be alive. Thomas the Train Engine and The Brave Little Toaster are definitive examples of Anthropomorphic animations of non-animal characters. There are also plenty of Furries (fans) who have Automobile and Airplane Anthropomorphic characters. (LanceFoxx jumps to mind)

Finally, while we're on the subject of Furry Fans' characters, don't forget the people with wild non-standard characters. The best example here would be someone like Slug, who is a Kraid, the first major boss in Metroid, who also draws lots of wild Monster art.
