My significant other and I have been what we call "closet furries" for quite some time now, but we have recently decided we would like to adventure out into the fandom. We're not really sure where to start and could really use some suggestions.

Other than going to conventions, what is the best way to get involved?

Where is the best place to introduce my fursona? I'm not really looking for role play, but I want it to mean more than just one post. Where is the best place to hang out with other furries in this way?

Looks like AnthroCon July 4-7th 2013 reg. is now open (CLICK ME)! Of course getting your badge now means you have a chance at getting a low badge number so you can say, “look I am better” … or just that you should do it now and not wait until the last-minute like most do. There is a slight change this year for this Fast and Furrious themed con, if you are an artist you’ll need to pay a 5% fee in the artist alley. The fee covers the costs to the con who used to foot it when staffing and helping artists with fee transactions. So far that is the only change, but I’m sure they’ll be more so stay tuned.

I am not a wealthy man. I cannot purchase a fursuit. However, I would thoroughly enjoy trying to pull off a "poor man's Alex Kovas" (sans semi-nudity) for my Halloween costume. All I need is some good makeup and maybe a snout and/or ear prosthesis. I will be making gloves and a tail myself. Any tips on where I can find some of those things? For reference, I am a st. Bernard. I appreciate any help y'all can render!
