Back like the Plague

Furry Reddit - Wed 10 Oct 2012 - 13:48

And dragging along a redesign of my Fursonas. (I shudder when I say that word and I have no idea why.)

Basically I used to depict myself as Two Grey Wolf twins. One male, one female. Male on was the more derpy of the two, basically my every day self, and the female one was the more sensible, academic one that keeps me in-line. My conscience and brain really. But I decided that the Wolf didn't really suit me anymore. So I asked my friends and stuff, and we came to the conclusion (Somehow) that a Collie suited me.

So I drew them again as two Collies and took a crappy webcam photo because scanner does not play nice with pencil. They are called Randall and Petra and there is nothing special about them. =|

How difficult would it be to run a usenet server to post to groups such as alt.fan.furry?

alt.fan.furry - Wed 10 Oct 2012 - 13:45
So, now that I realize you guys are still around, I was thinking, since i'm going to be getting a nice shiny linode virtual private server, why not host a news server? i could see about setting it up for binaries and letting my friends use it.

What do you guys think?

news.flufftails.se (or something) sound good?

How to Get "Well Known" as a Furry

Ask Papabear - Wed 10 Oct 2012 - 12:03
Hey Papa Bear, I was wondering how I can become well known in the furry fandom, even though I won't be able to go to conventions or gatherings.

--David

* * *

Dear David,

The goal of being a furry should never be to be “well known,” if you mean in the sense of being a popufur—that is, someone who wants to be famous and popular for the sake of being famous and popular and having their egos stroked.

On the other paw, if what you mean “well known” in the sense that you want to make a lot of friends even though you cannot for some reason go to meets and cons (lack of money, transportation, etc.), then that’s simple. As you must know by now, there are all kinds of places to meet and chat with furries online, including SoFurry, FurAffinity, MyFur, Furry4Life, and on and on and on. That’s how I started meeting furries and where I socialized for the first few years of my involvement in the fandom before actually meeting furries in person.

The other possible interpretation of your quick letter is that you are trying to get the word out about a furry business you might have. The two best ways I’ve found for doing that about this column is to advertise on furry sites and to have a Facebook page (you might also do Twitter, but Papabear really dislikes twitting).

Being furry should be about having fun! Don't worry if you are popular and well known. You have a whole world of imagination spread out before your paws--go explore!

Hope that answers your question! Bear Hugs!

Opinion: [adjective][species] on furry’s ‘HIV problem’

Furry News Network - Wed 10 Oct 2012 - 08:25
Author: jm I recently posted an article on [adjective][species], Furries & HIV, that I think deserves wide attention. The furry community hasn’t has a significant outbreak of HIV, but we’re being placed at risk by attitudes towards safe sex. I chatted with a HIV-positive furry (who was happy to be publicly quoted) and a furry [...]

Question about suits

Furry Reddit - Tue 9 Oct 2012 - 19:55

Hey everyone. I don't think I've ever posted here but I had a question about fursuit construction.

I know there are a few suit makers out there who have a jaw that moves with the wearer when he/she moves theirs. Who, would you say, makes the best version of this piece?

My Sir, who has a bdsm gear company, wants to construct a hood for puppy play that has this feature :)

Unpopular opinion time: what's the fursona cliche or trait that bothers you the most?

Furry Reddit - Tue 9 Oct 2012 - 18:42

(Note: This is just my very, very subjective opinion, apologies to anyone I offend! Don't ever let anyone else dictate what your 'sona "should" look like.)

I guess I'm technically cheating, because I have two.

1) Human hair. I'm not talking about bangs, or an animal that already sorta has a mane or something, just amplified. I mean more like those pictures of an anthro housecat with a Marge Simpson hairdo or a wolf with rainbow liberty spikes. I try to imagine what it would look like in real life, rather than a cartoon, and it just looks so absolutely absurd I can't handle it.

2) Any time someone has a "likes" section on their ref sheet that includes the word "muffins", I immediately write them off as one of those obnoxiously hyper "OMG SOOO RANDOM LOOOOL" furs from high school.

Edit: Just remembered a third one: when people choose a specific species (this happens a lot with wolves, for some reason) and then their fursona's anatomy looks nothing like the chosen species. asdfkjllsajogpqhnhhqk wolves do not have gigantic ears and tails as long as their body, if you want a fox, just choose a frickin fox then

So, guys, am I just horribly judgmental, or do you all have things like this that just bug you?

Noted furry artist arrested for child pornography...

Furries In The Media - Tue 9 Oct 2012 - 17:27

A well-known member of furry fandom was arrested last week for sexual exploitation of a minor after Tucson, Ariz., police seized thousands of images of child pornography from his home.

Mitchell Beiro—a noted furry artist, foamcore painter, and convention guest—is a member of a local group of Tucson furries known as the “Tucson Mob.” He was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation that began last December by the Tucson Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit into online peer-to-peer file-sharing of child pornography. Beiro was held in jail on 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Bail was set at $7,000.

Furry fandom, the practice of assuming a personality with both human and animal traits, has long been notorious for the “freaky” or “weird” exploits of its denizens, who bond over their love for fictional animorphic characters and other famous fictional animals. A 2001 Vanity Fair article described one furry convention as a literal freak show:

[T]hree men known as Pack Rat, Rob Fox, and Zen Wolph are scratching one another’s backs—grooming one another, like macaques in a zoo. ‘Skritching,’ they call it. I am tempted to turn around and run.

Subsets of furry fandom are definitely ripe for controversy, with "plushies” (people with a fondness for stuffed animals), babyfurs (people who enjoy role-playing as young animals or children), and “lifestylers” (people who try to live the furry lifestyle, in whatever fashion that means for them) often facing ridicule for their habits, hobbies, and fashion sense.

More seriously, with its numerous links to zoophilia (attraction to animals or depictions of animals), furry fandom is frequently accused of harboring pedophiles and bestiality. There’s probably no real way to calculate how many actual deviants lurk within furry fandom, but some furries at sites like Vivisector police their own communities and publicize the criminal behavior of members of the furry community when they spot it.

On furry news site Flayrah’s announcement of Beiro’s arrest, Freaky Lynx responded with indignation to a suggestion that the Furry fandom could be a breeding ground for illegal behavior:

So if someone calls himself/herself a furry and does something heinous, we're all supposed to bear the brunt of their actions when the rules about who is a furry is squishy and the rest of us had nothing to do with said actions?..[L]et's not go crazy with the bad and forget the good.

Still others questioned whether Beiro’s arrest would lead to a conviction, since the news report issued by the Tucson police did not clarify whether the files in his possession were of representative artwork (which is rarely brought to trial) or real photographs.

Tucson police stated they had linked Beiro to an unreported case of child molestation in California and urged any other victims to come forward.
