We all know the story, I watched animated anthromorphic animals when I was young and fell in love. However, this is where our story takes a twist. Some years later, I found a group of people I enjoyed the company of, some people who played video games as I do. Now, almost daily, these friends of mine would talk to each other of what was happening on certain parts of this forum, Reddit. I had heard the name reddit, but I have never been interested in forums, but rather ways of talking directly through IM of various sources, face-to-face, etc.; basically any way I could hold a conversation with instant feedback. Years went on and I would always intently listen to what my friends had to say, however most of it flew directly over my head, such as their first mention of furries. My friends have never been fans of furries, and so the first I ever heard of furries is that they were "people with animal fetishes that enjoy dressing up in costumes and having sex", (the average misconception I have recently learned.) I immediately dismissed the thought as I thought it was no deeper than that, that is, until I found my first true exposure to furries on a GMOD server. As we often did, my friends and I were all looking for a TTT server that had low ping for all of us that was open. One of my friends called out, over skype, that he had found one and that we should join him through the legacy browser (for those of you who play multiplayer GMOD, for those who don't, the legacy browser is simply a way of connecting to games your steam friends are connected to.) Instantly one of my friends shouts an obscenity and asks why we were joining the server "The Furry Fort". My friend had apparently not seen the name and was already loading in so we decided to give it a go. Upon downloading resources we already had cartoony pictures of animals in the background, (plus a variety of different musics). This was odd but piqued my interest as I got the warm feeling I often do when I see furry artwork. Later that night, as we all said our goodbyes I began researching. What is a furry? What do furries do? Etc. When finally I came upon a news article about furries. I read about the roleplaying, FurryMate, furry conventions, and finally why most people decide to call themselves furries. I read about people attempting to overcome fantastic odds against them, to slowly break the chains of their pasts, whatever they may be, through creating an alter ego known as a fursona. Ones fursona is special because it doesn't have to deal with politics or racism or sexism, but rather is a way for one to completely relieve themselves of stress while having a good time with a community that supports and loves them.

And that is why I decided to call myself a furry.
