Not mythological ones like chimera or hippogryphs. I've noticed something when looking at an old ref sheet I made up. The ears... and face. Well... any of you seen the movie Gremlins? Mogwai/Gremlins are technically animals, right? Could one of them be furry-ized?

This is a story about a dog. This dog had large pointy ears, and a scraggly coat of fur, but he was a mutt. Born on the streets, he never had a good life. Each day was a struggle for food. Whenever he passed by people, they would kick him and shout at him. No one really cared about this dog, and he simply did what he could to stay alive.

One day, he was caught by the animal shelter. He was taken to a cage with other dogs. He didn't even grow up around other dogs, it had always been just him. He saw them as alien and beyond understanding. He had seen people, though. He knew people. And people scared him.

Each day, he laid in the back of his cage. People would come, and they seemed nice, but he didn't move. Just because people seemed nice, didn't mean they were. The other dogs would jump and bark and wag their tails, but he didn't understand any of that. He knew fear, and he knew being alone. Day after day passed, and no one even showed a bit of interest in him.

By the end, he was thin and weak. When the people who owned the shelter entered his cage and put a leash on him, he didn't even react. He was dragged slowly to the gas chamber, shut inside, and he laid down for the last time.

But what no one knows about this dog is that it only would have taken one person to truly care. One person to see the good in him. If one person had made the effort to love the dog and be patient with him, in spite of him knowing so little and being broken, then he would have been just as good as... no, better than the other dogs. Because he would have been loyal. He would have finally been taught about how good life could be, and how bright it is when people care and are genuine. And that dog would have been the best dog someone could ever hope for.

Unfortunately, this is something that people have stopped doing. No one has the time, or the energy, or the patience, to care about someone who is broken. No one wants to look for the good in someone who struggles to see happiness, because they assume it cannot be found. Sometimes, we can't make our own happiness all on our own. Sometimes, when we are beaten enough, we forget how to be happy. And it takes someone who truly cares to mend things.
