Fandom's Favorite Fursuit Fracas
2012 saw a crossover with the Furry Basketball Association, which provided names for the group brackets used for the single-elimination portion of the competition.
Organizers say almost 400 matchups were made and 70,000 votes taken during the Fracas.
Bucktown Tiger's fans, who go by the name of Shopwreckers, have reason to celebrate. The piano-playing fursuiter has become the first feline to win the Fandom's Favorite Fursuit Fracas, vanquishing opponent Twitch Da Woof in one of the most highly contested finals the competition has witnessed. Both furry musicians were underdogs in their own right, and neither were expected to make it as far as they did.
This year, only owners may nominate fursuits – up to four per person. Future events may occur on a biannual schedule.
384 fursuits were nominated by 521 nominators. 43 more were opted-out by their owners. Self-nominations were permitted, but had to be balanced out by nominating equal numbers of suits owned by others.
Fandom members are invited to submit both full-body fursuits and partial fursuits which cover the wearer completely when clothes are included. Fursuits should be owned by other furry fans; corporate and sports mascots are not eligible, and copyrighted characters may be removed on request.
Up to eight fursuits owned by any one person will be considered. Self-nominations must be balanced by nominations for the suits of others. Owners wishing to exclude individual suits or opt out completely must do so before April 3. Nominations must be in before March 30.
The fursuit tourney, now entering its fourth year, has grown to become a popular feature among many fursuiters - though some maintain the event is little but a popularity contest.
Yippee Coyote, one of the many suits of Californian fursuiter Jimmy Chin, has won the 2009 Fandom's Favorite Fursuit Fracas out of 326 entries. Yippee won with 327 votes to Frisbee's 283 – a lead of 44 votes.
Nominations for the Fandom's Favorite Fursuit Fracas have closed, with 326 fursuit characters proposed for the 2009 event - an 11% increase over 2008. Voting for the knockout tournament will begin once all nominees have been contacted for their permission.
Last year's event ended with a landslide victory by Nevermint's Jäger from One Fur All Studios, who attracted 319 votes in the last round to Greifer's 195 (Tilt Longtail/Jax). In 2007 — the first year in which the tournament was held — Frazzle (Rose Quoll/self-made) beat Sophie Cabra (MixedCandy) in a close 135-122 final.
Many now turn to full-time costume makers for their suits, with professional mascot builders MixedCandy and Arend Studios each responsible for twice the entries of any other individual builder. Still, the top five account for less than 40% of the total, and just over half the nominees were created by builders outside the top ten.
The winner, Frazzle (created by Frazzle and Rose Quoll) beat fellow finalist Sophie Cabra (Mixed Candy) by 135 votes to 122. The semi-finalists were Takala (Arend Studios) and Lucky Coyote (Don't Hug Cacti).
The contest was organized as a series of one-on-one knockout rounds, with a simple vote deciding who would proceed to the next round. Groups were formed from 16 regions, named after those fursuits entered with the most nominations. Results were calculated on the journal, and reported on WikiFur.
