Good point, but I don't think they'd invented that in 1917.

Guns kill a few people every day.

Butter kills us all a little bit day by day.

After reading the Wikipedia entry, I realize I've entirely missed the point. But screw that; butter and its evil offspring, margarine, must be destroyed! Butter and margarine cause heart disease! Guns just cause furries to be banned from major conference gatherings! Zing!

No, you got the more topical point. Both guns and butter have lost favour in recent years and I thought it would be interesting to turn the question around. :-)

Wait, so I've been duped in to choosing between "You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't?" Damn, I feel like an early 90's Simpsons episode! RAGE! ;D

D) All of the above

It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion.
It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning.

Logically speaking, they can't all be worse than one another.

I never said they were worse than each other, though ;)

Guns are worse.

Butter you can avoid or find an alternative like honey. Guns you can't avoid. There will always be someone out there that has to show off that he has a gun. He (or she) does not have to wave it in your face, just having it exposed as in open carry is enough to intimidate another person.

That's why body armor exists.

Frankly, I think guns are better for society. Guns allow you to defend yourself and provide food for yourself (and, possibly, for others as well).

You can't defend yourself with butter, nor can you use it to provide food (unless, of course, you're cooking with it).

Real butter was eaten long ago and no ill effects (obesity). But to day, it's bad because we sit in front of a computer, a game system or behind a desk. Butter can be missed used by eating TOO much or when used by people who do not exercise.

Guns do not kill (ya, we keep hearing this) and actually is a tool that can be used, or not used. But for society a gun is dangerous. Not by it's self but when used by those who are criminals, those who are mentally unstable or those who like flashing it around to make them feel superior, THAT is the hazards of a gun.

"[A] a gun is dangerous . . . when used by those who are criminals [or] those who are mentally unstable . . ."

That's EXACTLY why I said what I did.

If I were confronted with such a situation, I'd rather have an effective weapon (e.g., a gun) than an effective cooking ingredient (e.g., butter).

As a wiser man than I once said:

"If you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns."
