Yasha: Legends of the Demon Blade Review
Looking for something new in the roguelite scene, my attention was caught by a handsome tiger warrior in the trailer for Yasha: Legends of the Demon Blade, an action RPG with roguelite elements by 7QUARK. Beyond that, the game oozed style and fast-paced action that begged to be experienced. Thankfully, that game has finally arrived on Steam. Yasha: Legends of the Demon Blade is full of character, captivating gameplay, and just as intriguing storytelling. If you’re a fan of Asian art styles and lore, this game will be a must-play for you.

2024 Cóyotl Award Winners Announced!
Voting is closed for the Cóyotl Awards. The counting machine has been cleared of shed fur and we have tabulated the totals. Thanks to the Furry Film Burrow for hosting the announcement of winners this year–a venue that we may use for future awards announcements too!
The winners of the 2024 Cóyotl Awards are:
Winner for Best Novel
Far Flung – Utunu
Winner for Best Novella
You Look Lost, Pup – Rob MacWolf
Winner for Best Short Story
“Houses of Stone” – Utunu (in The Heavens Within Our Grasp)
Winner for Best Anthology
The Heavens Within Our Grasp – Furry Historical Fiction Society
Winner for Best Other Work
Voice of Dog – Rob MacWolf
Congratulations to the winners! A big thanks to everyone who worked to bring their work to publication this year. We as a fandom are so lucky to have writers, editors, publishers, and readers who are so generous with their time and talent. Truly, we couldn’t do this without you.
Sincerely,
- The staff of the Furry Writers Guild
Note: It came to our attention after voting started that Kyell Gold’s novel Squeak Thief is over 70,000 words. While this word count qualifies it as a novel by the Cóyotl Awards, we chose not to change it while the process was ongoing. Our main concern was to not invalidate the votes already cast. Based on the votes, the change in category would not have changed the winner in either category. While this might seem like a minor issue, we felt that being transparent in this process was the right way to go. Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted.
Clash: Artifacts Of Chaos Review (Xbox)
I made it no secret that while I love the first person genre, I’m always on the lookout for games outside of my comfort zone to check out, so when I stumbled across Clash: Artifacts Of Chaos, it did tick those boxes but I didn’t pay much attention to it at first. That is, until I saw that the developers, ACE Team, also made Zeno Clash; a game I really enjoyed and felt it deserved a bigger audience then it had. So, seeing them return with a new title in the same universe, I was excited and, outside of some shortcomings, I don’t think I will ever play any game that is quite like Clash: Artifacts Of Chaos and I mean that in the most positive way possible.

EDITORIAL: AI IS AN ABOMINATION TO FURRY ARTS
Since Papabear's mailbox has been sitting empty for nearly two months now, I thought I would write a short editorial.
Yesterday, I received a letter from a young person who is part of a company that specializes in creating AI furry images (adult and SFW). They asked me if I would promote their service on my website and, in exchange, they would place an ad for "Ask Papabear" on their site.
I will not provide a name of the writer or of the company or its website (because I do not wish to give them free advertising), but here is their letter:
"Hello,
We are a small team offering an AI tool to make fursona for the furry community. We're looking for blogs to add a link to them in exchange for an article on AI or furry fandom content that we write ourselves. I came across your site, which looks pretty good! Would you be interested in a one-off article for your blog? In exchange, we'll add a link for our tool in this one."
My reply:
Dear XXXX,
It is my personal belief that AI technology should not be used to supplant the creativity of the furry arts. My position is that what makes us human is our ability to create music, art, literature, and other such endeavors as a way of connecting to other people, expressing our souls, sharing our hearts, and bringing beauty and thought to our universe. AI can be very useful in such things as statistics, medicine, computer modeling, and the like, but when it comes to art, it contradicts everything that art is about.
Computers cannot feel pain. They cannot experience joy or love or hate or irony. They cannot create originality. They can only mimic and steal what other artists have done.
As Hayao Miyazaki said, "Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted… I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
The joy I find in the furry fandom is not in creating some shortcut to making some furporn to paw off to or to deny a hard-working artist a chance to make a living because I had AI draw me my fursona. The joy of the fandom is in creativity and sharing our hearts and souls through writing, drawing, crafting, filmmaking, music, and the sartorial arts. Many young furs like yourself [the writer is 24]--enamored as always by the latest tech--try to portray AI as "just a tool." No, this is not a paintbrush or even Photoshop software. AI learns how to paint (poorly, rigidly) by stealing from artists and learning from their works.
The furry fandom was founded in the late 1970s as a celebration of the creativity in anthropomorphic arts. Your furry AI generator is an abomination and an insult to the fandom, and I will not be a part of it or help you promote it in any way.
Sincerely,
Grubbs Grizzly

You Opened Up a Can o’ Woof-Arse
And then, we went to the L.A. Times Festival of Books — where we saw things like the preview of Ten Ton Titan Terrier, a new comic from writer David Pepose (Spencer & Locke) and artist Ornella Greco (Total Suplex of the Heart). “When an asteroid unleashes a horde of alien monsters known as Bio-Titans, Earth must turn to a suit of extraterrestrial battle armor to save the day — but there’s just one catch. Because the only creature on the planet capable of turning it on… is an 11-inch-tall terrier named Holly. With the Bio-Titan threat escalating by the second, Holly and her scientist owner Sam will find their unique bond tested, as he trains his mischievous mutt to become not just man’s best friend, but humanity’s only hope.” Look for it this October, from Papercutz.

San Francisco Bay Area furries: register now for SF Pride Parade and Galactic Camp con
A street celebration and a party on a battleship – Two of the biggest events for one of the world’s most active furry communities.
For June 29: NorCal Furries are raising funds to be in the San Francisco Pride Parade.
This huge city-crossing festival will be on national TV with a million watchers, for a high energy show of costumes and colors where the furry group keeps getting awarded for expressing the purpose of Pride. Generous donors make tickets and the group’s own club party free for the community. Plans are in motion with about 300 tickets, so if you want to join, visit the page to get one now while you still can.
For May 24-26: Galactic Camp returns for a whole weekend.
Their 2018-2019 single day parties drew close to 1000 members. Those made a launch pad for an “un-con” on a WWII aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet, a floating historical landmark and nonprofit museum that’s sustained by unusual events. This unexpected non-hotel space will have panels, dealers, bars, DJ’s and the dances you do expect. Don’t miss the boat for this wonder of the furry world. Basic registration is upgraded to next tier for a limited time.
All of this makes a highly anticipated season after the local Fur Con – imagine living here!
SF Pride’s theme this year is Resistance
Since 2012, the NorCal Furries have brought hundreds of members a year to the San Francisco Pride Parade. Anyone can join, and it’s uniquely on a public street – this isn’t the typical closed hotel fursuit parade.
The unboxed experience requires checking weather, self-preparation without change space on street, and walking a mile route, besides hustling through crowds to meeting points. It’s worth it for here-ness with the allies of queerness, where high energy meets delighted viewing; it’s a good thing fursuit heads can protect you from all the cheering!
There’s something new and significant this year: stakes.
The government has been chilling sponsorship that keeps Pride events free to join. It’s less politically safe for corporate support, funds are tight, and it’s harder to get insurance for groups. There’s also overt moves against LGBT rights. Oppression of trans people uses furries as a pretext. Politicians in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and even the White House have named furries as causes to defund media and education. With such stakes on everyone, here’s a message from the executive director of SF Pride: “Ford says this year’s ‘Queer Joy is Resistance’ theme is a reminder of where Pride started: As a protest.” – ABC 7 News
The link again for tickets to march with NorCal Furries on June 29.
Ready for battle?
The USS Hornet is a battleship that ran missions like recovering astronauts from the ocean for the Apollo Space Program. See the artifacts, stick your face in the jets of vintage aircraft, or get your fursuit photo next to a real space suit!
It’s like a whole town to explore below deck, and it might be haunted… you’ll know if you catch a whiff of smoking in the officers lounge… but officially the refreshments are from 4 furry-run themed bars reachable with hatches and ladders, and food trucks out on the dock.
Those can keep you going for panels, the Dealer’s Den, gaming, or the dance competition. Learn fursuit building, art, storytelling, or just meet others in a nautical way – the rats on this ship can talk. Galactic Camp is sure to make stories unlike any con on earth.
The link again to register for Galactic Camp on May 24-26.

Fur and Fables - Early Access Review
Bullet hells aren’t necessarily a unique type of game to see over the past few years, so if you’re gonna develop one now, you’ve got to bring something unique (if not a few things) to the table. Fur and Fables is an Early Access release by Double Crow Games, with the spin on the tried-and-true formula being a cast of furry animal heroes that can battle through levels as a team of 1 to 6, all controlled by you in a line that becomes an auto-firing battalion that you move around the boundless stages. Additionally, the characters that make it through to the end of the stage keep the levels you upgrade them to. It was an overall surprisingly deep and fun experience that featured quirky art, unique gameplay ideas, and forgiving strategy.

Episode 567 - Three Dogs
What do you call a group of 3 nerdy white guys hanging out? A podcast.
Fuzz, Ajax, and Savrin sat down around a mic on Savrin's new laptop to just shoot the shit. Lots of Star Trek banter, Savrin getting derailed by Ajax, and other such silliness.
This is a free one, obviously.

Peace will Prevail and Protect
Here’s another independent comic book series that’s been around for a while — but we were only lucky enough to discover it recently. Tokai is a shaded black & white science fiction comic written and illustrated by A.R. Lytle. According to them, it’s about “…a little alien named Tokai caught in a war on his home planet, Arurha. He’s taken in by a family of rebels, bent on reclaiming their planet from the Network Invaders. The only problem,:Tokai is a pacifist. Tokai must use his wits to stay alive and protect the innocent as the war gradually descends into chaos at the hands of religious fanatics.” Four issues are available now.

Hidalgo Preview - Creatively Constructed Co-op
When you’re looking for games to play with a buddy, sometimes you just want to work together in a comfy setting, sitting back on your couch or over Discord and enjoying a story together. Hidalgo looks to provide that in a lovely way, based on our playthrough of the demo. After a successful Kickstarter campaign that you can still make late pledges to, Hidalgo is expected to come out May 2026. This should give the team at Infinite Thread Games plenty of time to craft and perfect an already pleasant experience. Here are our thoughts on the demo of Hidalgo, which I played on Steam for this preview.

FWG Monthly Newsletter May 2025
May has arrived after a very busy April! The Cóyotl Awards have concluded, and we’re working on an announcement venue to reveal the winners within a week or so.
The next big thing is guild officer elections. We have several guild members running for office this year, including one contested seat! That means we’ll have a guild-wide vote in mid-May. Until May 14, candidates will answer questions on the guild’s Discord server, in the “Guild Officer Elections” channel. If you have a question but want to remain anonymous, you can email it to furwritersguild [at] gmail.com and I will post it for you. On May 16, voting will start via online ballot, which I’ll announce here closer to the time. We will most likely make one of our rare guild-wide emails to alert members when voting is live, so this is a very good time to update your email address if you need to.
Convention season is well underway as spring and summer weather brings out furries like weird flowers in the northern hemisphere, and cooling weather in the southern hemisphere allows for suiting without too much risk of heat stroke. I hope you get a chance to attend a convention or furmeet in your area! Even if you can’t, hopefully you’ll get some time off work or school so you can do some writing.
