Dolphins show both tool use and culture

Furry News Network - Thu 21 Jul 2011 - 11:25

Author: Rakuen Growlithe

Dolphin tool use
A: Basket sponge
B: Dolphin wearing sponge
C: Debris on the sea bed
D: Hidden fish

Researchers in Shark Bay, Australia have identified tool use and cultural transmission of the tool use in dolphins.

The scientists observed some dolphins occasionally pulling basket sponges from the sea bed and using them to cover their snouts as they foraged for food on the sea bed. The sponges presumably provided them protection from the rocks and shells on the sea bed. However, it wasn’t known why the dolphins bothered to forage there.

The research team now report that dolphins perform this activity to catch fish living under the sand’s surface.

‘Legend of a Rabbit’ premieres in China

Furry News Network - Thu 21 Jul 2011 - 01:25

Author: Higgs Raccoon

LegendOfARabbit.jpgLegend of a Rabbit (Tu Xia Chuan Qi), a 3D animated film from Tianjin Film Studio and Beijing Film Academy, premiered in China earlier this month. [tip: Andrew Pam]

Featuring a variety of anthropomorphic animals and kung-fu sequences, Legend of a Rabbit had a budget of RMB120 million ($ 18 million), required 500 animators, and was in production for over three years.

The movie’s synopsis reads:

One day, a dying Kung Fu master flees from the Imperial City to a small village. He’s been betrayed by his number one disciple and is on his last dying breathe. He is found by a humble farmhouse cook named Tu who, at the request of the dying master, must return a very important Kung Fu Academy Tablet to the master’s daughter Peony in the imperial city. Tu made a simple promise that turns out to change his life forever.

Never having been to the city, Tu already got off to a dangerous start. He finds the Kung Fu Academy but finds that it has already been taken over by the number one disciple, a ruthless bear named Slash. The old master and his daughter has gone missing. But to keep to his promise, Tu has no choice but to stay in the Academy to wait for their return. He’s bullied from day one for knowing no Kung Fu. But serving as a cook there, he picks up some Kung Fu as the days go by.

At the imperial city he meets a mysterious girl (Peony) who keeps herself anonymous to keep her own safety. Rabbit never knew that this girl is the one he’s supposed to pass the tablet to. After many misunderstandings, they finally are able to connect – but not before the big bad villain Slash decides to kill Peony and Tu for intervening with his evil plan to take over the entire China.

Super-powered Furry Pets “Sidekicks” Graphic Novel Review

Furry News Network - Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 22:35

07/20/2011
By: bluebarker

Cover to "Sidekicks" by Dan SantatSynopsis: In a world were heroes and villains exist, Santat takes us to the perspective of the rather neglected pets of a superhero that sees villains more often than he does his new pets. With a recent tussle with some super villains, the superhero thinks its time to enlist the aid of a sidekick. Word spreads out to the four corners, and many will come. He doesn’t need to look far as none more eager to be his sidekick than his own pets. With the cat out of the house, the dog thinks he’s the most likely candidate against the chubby hamster named Fluffy and the newly arrived chameleon-lizard dubbed Shifty; they don’t really stand a chance. A friendly face from the past comes and helps the two tiny terrors have a fighting chance against the dog let alone against the scum of the city. The journey is long and filled with plot twists and humorous one-liners that will get anyone laughing, kids and adults alike. Pet competing over the love of their owner really takes a step back from the usual stories. Its a graphic novel about the value of family, forgiveness and all-around good fun.

Review: Dan Santat started out as an illustrator for some time now, but turning to illustrating his own stories his craft really shines through. From the looks of the art and design it is reminiscent of those Sunday Morning Comics with a splash of color and some dark moments as well. The overall look of the Graphic Novel is rough in stuff places giving it texture and real attention to detail in certain areas adds to the story and never takes away. Keying into the superhero element is just one factor of many that puts stresses on any family, whether its a family of parents and kids, or the caped crusader with pets to keep his company. The value of family and the importance of relationships really shines through with other themes such as “it doesn’t matter how small you are, you can still make a difference”, “wit and brains over brawn” and “always looking for the alternative to senseless violence, because once you cross that line you can’t go back”. Filled with nod offs to familiar figures, epic rivalry and witty humor of both the slapstick and verbal, its quite the page turner.
The real meat of the story comes from the tension between the dog and the cat. We know why dogs and cats don’t get along, but this time its personal and has some real weight behind it. Manny and Roscoe have been there from the beginning and yet they fight constantly. While Fluffy gets saddled with the new pet who doesn’t have a lick of sense about him. Yet more comes as Fluffy, a small hamster, how can he fight against bad guys who are bigger than him? Stronger than him? Manny comes in and tries to help out Fluffy for personal reasons and is reunited with an old friend with an even more malevolence than we first realize. And Shifty? Scared of everything and his only defense is to go invisible, how can he fight crime? Our heroes must find their place and learn life the way anyone with super powers can, which is to say that behind the super powers, behind the cool costumes and behind the mask, they really are just people and animals trying to do what they were meant to do.
By the end you’ll want more because it really is a great story that touches the soul and deserves to reread again and again. The cover alone says it all. The pets themselves are rather anthromorphic in a way through their proportions, expressions and ability to talk its no wonder they have so much fun being crime fighters. The camaraderie alone is enough to make any furry laugh their fur off. Personally to me its gets five out of five stars and two paws up all the way. But why don’t you be the judge of it and read it yourself. Available at booksellers nationwide and online, you don’t want to miss it. The expressions on page 5 are priceless.

This trailer was made by the the author of the graphic novel “Sidekicks”.

r/furry: What would you like improved?

Furry Reddit - Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 21:42

I was going through the spam/reported list and was wondering what you would like to see.

Just some ideas:

  • a different theme
  • smiley icons
  • more moderation or less restriction on content
  • better defined rules

I was wanted to tidy up the right column.

What rating should r/furry have? Adult? PG? G?

Should adult content be diverted to r/yiff ?

EDIT:

You can do a lot with CSS. I was trying to emulate Furaffinity's style in this test.

EDIT:

There has been one problem with reddit styles. CSS3 doesn't work yet.

Best place for Uploading literature?

Furry Reddit - Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 21:37

Ok, so I don't have a computer; I write and post all from my iPod. I have written a considerable amount of literature, and as I am on an iPod, AI cannot upload to FA. Where is a site that I can just paste in my stuff?

I intend on sharing it with you r/furry, as it is SFW; should I just paste it into a self.furry post, or do you guys know of a site that would fulfill my needs?

Rules on posting your own stuff? (e.g. artwork, literature)

Furry Reddit - Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 20:11

Hey fellow furs,

I just wanted to clarify something before I post a link. I have an anthropomorphic themed story I'm writing which I want to share, but I'm conscious of what people think about others posting their own artwork or literature. I know some other sub-reddits hate it, so I just wanted to run it by you guys to see if it's okay. If not, I understand :)

I look forward to your replies. Thanks.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 Gets So Freaking Furry With Rocket Raccoon

Weasel Wordsmith - Wed 20 Jul 2011 - 13:25

Capcom announced today that they are releasing Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, a special edition of Marvel vs Capcom 3 with additional characters. Take a look at this roster, ’cause the game got a nice little boost of furry.

Capcom:
Firebrand
Strider Hiryu
Phoenix Wright
Vergil
Nemesis
Frank West

Marvel:
Hawkeye
Ghost Rider
Dr Strange
Iron Fist
Rocket Raccoon
Nova

On the Capcom side we’ve got Firebrand, buff shirtless demon of Ghosts and Goblin’s fame. You may recognize him from accidentally clicking on crossover slash art of him and Brooklyn from Gargoyles.

And even more bizarre is the choice of Rocket Raccoon on the Marvel side. Remember him? No, of course you don’t. But he’s here, and that’s kinda really fucking awesome.

The rest of the Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 roster is various levels of awesome/boring as well. Phoenix Wright is an incredible choice, but Ghost Rider, Nova, and Iron Fist? Meh.

5.  FC:Unleashed! Logo Contest! Calling all artists!

Hey Everyone!

If you’re unfamiliar with FC:Unleashed!, we are the variety show at Further Confusion!

Since we are fairly new, we found ourselves needing a logo to represent us!  And to make it fun and creative, the FC:U! staff decided it’d be fun to hold a contest.

Here’s the skinny:

Prize:

The prize is $50. (Which will be converted to your currency on request) We are offering a finder’s fee of $25. (The way this works: If the winner we choose was referred to the contest by someone else, then the person who referred the winner also wins!) So when you submit your entry, please remember to include the information of the person who referred you, if you were referred.

What we want:

A logo. Text and graphic. Something that represents the fun that is FC:Unleashed! and encompasses Further Confusion.  We’d like it to say Further Confusion or FC on it somewhere as well as, FC:Unleashed! to be the main focus of the piece.

Be creative! There is no theme or genre that we’re looking for specifically so have fun with it :)

The Rules:

We need the files to be shown in 3 sizes. Small, medium and large. You can submit the files in .ai, .psd or .jpg format. We’d like the largest of the three sizes to be no bigger than 1000×1000 pixels with a resolution of 300.

When you submit your artwork to us, it will become our property and we will not change your artwork but you will not get to say how and where it is used.

You can submit up 3 designs total for consideration.

The deadline for submission is Sunday, July 24th, 2011 at Midnight PST and winner will be announced shortly thereafter.

When you submit your artwork, please include your real name, fan name, the best way to contact you and where you’re located so we can factor in the method of currency to pay you in should you win. Also, what method of payment you prefer for your winnings. And finally, if someone referred you, please include the same information for them and where you heard about us.

Contacting us:

You can e-mail your submissions to: fcu@furtherconfusion.org

Also, if you’re interested in submitting an act for the show you can get all the details here: <http://furcon.livejournal.com/661318.html>

Other stuff:

This is going to be seen by lots and lots of people! So make something you’re proud of ;) We’re going to be using this for all of our advertising and anything show related and we will completely credit the winner for their awesome work! :) Thank you in advance for your entries!  And please please PLEASE boost the signal! Who knows, it might score you $25!

6.  Dealers Room Sold out – Waiting List Full

Yes, the Dealer Room for Further Confusion 2012 is sold out. And we have 30 people on the waiting list. So we are closing the waiting list at this time. Should circumstances change in some manner, we may open the waiting list again, but at this point in time we have more people on the list than we expect to be able to provide a chance of space to. Anyone applying after June 30th, 2011 will be turned away rather than added to the waiting list.

However, if you don’t mind setting up and tearing down each of the three days that our dealer spaces are open, AND you are going to be selling material of the PG or less in rating, you might consider…

7.  The Furry Market Place

Soon we will be opening the Furry Market Place section of our Dealers area on the Further Confusion 2012 website. Once we do, full information will be provided including the rules and a link to the Furry Market Place online Application. On or shortly after August 1st, 2011, we will activate a link on the Furry Market Place section that will take folks to the online application. The rest of the page will be live at least 2 weeks before that.

The Furry Market Place is a collection of 20 spaces in the hallway outside the Further Confusion 2012 Dealer Room. These spaces are unsecured spaces in a public area, so each vendor must set up and tear down daily as there is no secure storage available. Also, being a public area, we must limit what may be sold, advertised or displayed in this space to materials of no greater than a PG rating. Any materials of PG- 13 or greater is only allowed to be sold INSIDE the Dealer Room. Also, all sellers of taxable goods or services must have a Seller’s Permit from the California State Board of Equalization and collect sales tax in accordance with California State Law. Further Confusion does NOT provide this for you. While it is not necessary to have a seller’s permit to apply for a Furry Market Place space, you MUST have one by the time the convention begins, and provide the number for same to the FC2012 Furry Market Place manager before you will be allowed to set up you space.  Further information will be available on the Furry Market Place page
once it goes live on the website.

Furry Market Place spaces cost US$75.00 and include one (1) full membership as a part of that amount. The sales/display area of the space is approximately 4′ x 2.5′. (Half of a ‘standard’ 8-foot table.)
