Furries In The Media - Tue 22 Feb 2011 - 16:47
http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/09/bad-kitty-a-meditation-on-cat-people

I wouldn't link to something this lame, except that the overwhelmingly negative response in the comments suggests that the whole furry bashing thing is pretty much old and played out (yes, we know that, but more and more people now know it too):

"I'm just glad to hear somebody somewhere say 'I just didn't feel like watching a movie that didn't look like I was going to enjoy'"

"Nice to see that Tor.com is finding brave and incisive columnists to go out on controversial limbs and take provocative positions like making fun of furries. My hat's off to you sir: I have never seen such opinions expressed in public before, and the world has been made a better place by your stunningly original observations."

"Maybe furries 'get all defensive' because they're tired of being the butt of the same old jokes. Making fun of furries was old, like, in 2005. And however icky you think they are, accusing them of bestiality is neither cool nor accurate."

"There is so much ignorance and generalization in this article that for a moment I wondered if this was really Tor or if I had stumbled on Pontifex or an Onion parody.
Ok, so, first? None of my furry friends watched Avatar because the Na'vi are furry (furry? more like smurfs). They watched Avatar because of the 3D and the explodey-wodey. Like, you know, everyone else."

"There are just an endless supply of people on the internet who have never stepped out of their own comfy little rooms surrounded by people who are just like them. He thinks this is vitriol? He's never been to Daily Kos or Five Thirty Eight or Little Green Footballs. Never been to The Angry Black Woman or Making Light or the Whatever.
Which explains why he continues to fail to understand that the issue isn't a joke that fell flat, it's that the basis of the joke was 'I get to mock women with moustaches and other people at the bottom of the social hierarchy!'
He's just a fool, and an ignoramus; one of an endless number. It's not even angry-making, it's just a pathetic waste."

Maybe Bob Fingerman is a great cartoonist, but he just comes across as clueless at best.

http://suicidegirls.com/interviews/Bob+Fingerman/
"I have not met a furry. I freely admit bigotry against furries. They?'re just fucking weirdos."

Uh, Bob? Maybe appearing naked at the beginning of the video *isn't* the best way to endear your public into buying your comics??

The guy was pwned. The end.

Sorry about that!

furryne.ws - Mon 21 Feb 2011 - 19:46
This is way I hate the hands-on approach to fighting spam. I got a little trigger-happy and killspammed ostin. I've restored the delete article and the problem now is that our current CMS isn't so smart. So, consider this a call for help for this site. I could use another active admin' or 2 to help monitor for spam, and another programmer (beginners welcome!) to help with either the migration of this CMS to a newer version of pligg, to another more robust CMS altogether, or to develop 1 from scratch. Hit me up @ashmcairo on Twitter if you'd like to pitch in. Thanks!

Polar Bears Pushing Beer

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 21 Feb 2011 - 04:59

Empresas Polar is a well-known brewer of cerveza (beer) in Venezuela. Recently they decided to create a campaign bringing their company logo, a polar bear, to life. Enter The Character Shop, an outfit famous for their creation of animatronic characters for use in advertising — a great many of which are anthropomorphic animals. They helped Empresas Polar create the character of Pedroso the Polar Bear for their new line of TV commercials. And the people of Venezuela seem to be taking to them — and Pedroso, the 7-foot tall bear himself — quite well. The Character Shop has a page dedicated to their creation of Pedroso, and of course you can see some of his actual commercials on YouTube.

Alan T. Panda withdraws guilty pleas

Furry News Network - Sun 20 Feb 2011 - 23:53

Author: Higgs Raccoon

Alan Berlin, better known in the furry fandom as Alan T. Panda, has withdrawn his guilty pleas in relation to charges that he sexually propositioned a 15-year-old boy online.

Berlin came to the attention of the media in May 2009, when he was first arrested for unlawful contact with a minor. According to investigators, Berlin, a resident of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, had been in communication with the teen for several weeks and had proposed travelling to the boy’s home to have sex in the backyard, and in a shed on his parents’ property.

In the furry fandom, Berlin was a fursuiter, babyfur, and “daddyfur/caretaker with a cub side”. The media noted Berlin’s connection to the fandom, as investigators believed that he and the boy had met on a furry internet site. When Berlin’s home was searched, wolf and cat-like costumes were found, and it was alleged that Berlin had discussed dressing up in animal costumes as part of having sex with the boy.

Early atrocity tourism website Portal of Evil closes

furryne.ws - Sun 20 Feb 2011 - 22:12
"Portal of Evil (PoE) closed down last week after over a decade of "atrocity tourism". The site - founded in late 1999 by Cleveland, Ohio-based duo K. Thor Jensen and Chet Faliszek - was a directory of "weird, unusual and evil" websites, each discussed and mocked in turn by PoE forum members. Numerous furry sites were featured, including the website of 2 the Ranting Gryphon (who devoted a rant to PoE), Cub Central, and webcomics such as Sabrina Online. The site never gained as much notoriety in the furry fandom as rival site Something Awful (SA), but PoE had a contingent of furry p

International Furry Survey Closes

Furry News Network - Sun 20 Feb 2011 - 14:38

We were contacted by Courtney “Nuka” Plante this morning about the status of the survey.

“We’re pleased to report that the response has far exceeded our
expectations!  We had been hoping for a response of between 250-1,000
furries, and ended up getting nearly 7,000 responses!  As such, we are
taking the survey down so that we can begin analysis of the data (far
earlier than expected!).

I was just contacting you to ask if you could take down the survey link
and/ or mention to folks that the survey is now closed, and if you could
thank them on our behalf for their enthusiasm and support for our
research!  When the data analysis is complete we’ll be sure to get in
contact with you and let you and the community know how to look at the
results from the survey and to keep up with how the data are being used in
scientific research!  And, of course, we’ll hopefully have another survey
up in the future, given how incredibly successful this one has been!”

Well done everyone!  Thanks to all who participated from the story link here or who retweeted our daily tweets!

large_FurDUAtpaw.jpgAustralia’s newest furry convention, FurDU (Furry Down Under), has announced reaching capacity for 2011.

FurDU organizer FlameDrake revealed that the 100-person cap on attendance was insisted upon by the Vibe Hotel, the same venue FurDU was hosted at when it launched in April 2010.

Oz Kangaroo confirmed that staff are in discussion with several larger hotels on the Gold Coast, in the hope of lifting this cap in future years.

If you have ever woken up feeling like an African Wild dog after a night out on the town, you are not alone. Meg Morris, a local furry of Knoxville, Tenn., feels that way all the time.

Furries can be found anywhere around the world, or in Meg’s case, right here in Knoxville. You just have to know where to look.

Predominantly found in the north, these people and their culture are one of the south’s best kept secrets.

The million dollar question remains: what is a furry?
