New furry-inspired clothing line looks to make a splash in the UK and beyond

Furry News Network - Sun 8 May 2011 - 00:56

By: Tim “Kijani” Watanabe

In today’s down economy, it takes a great idea, a dream, and a lot of persistence to start a niche-market clothing line.

But 5V5 (V), who is based out of the picturesque countryside town of Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, believes he has all of the above, and then some. He is the owner of a new company, Saint Le Fur, which specializes in clothing catered to members of the furry fandom.

“I’ve been interested in fashion design since I was 15,” V said. “I was always interested in seeing fashion forecasts and how they shaped peoples’ personalities.”

An inspired college student, V didn’t let the heartbreak of not being accepted into a university course in fashion get to him. Instead, his combined interest in designer labels and the furry fandom led V to create his own line, with a name as unique as his clothing.

“I wanted it to be different and original for the community in its own way, and thus the name (Saint Le Fur),” V explained. “Its actual meaning is ‘The Righteous Fur,’ meaning, ‘daring to be different.’”

Frisky Soulwolf shows off one of Saint Le Fur's T-shirt designs in Times Square, New York City. Saint Le Fur, owned by 5V5, is a new furry-themed fashion line based out of the United Kingdom.

According to V, the target market for Saint Le Fur is wide-ranging, “roughly 17 to 30-year-old males and females,” he said. What sets Saint Le Fur’s shirts apart from other furry-themed apparel is that the brand’s one-of-a-kind stylization offers “closeted” furries something to wear in public without feeling uncomfortable.

Hosted on www.streetshirts.co.uk for the time being and being based out of the United Kingdom, a majority of Saint Le Fur’s vibrant shirts are UK-themed, but V is looking forward to the opportunity to branch out to a more worldwide audience as hit company gets off the ground.

“Due to the costs of shipping and handling, we are mainly aimed at the UK community,” V said, adding that some of his line is inspired by DJs and the clubbing scene. “When we build a solid fan base, I’d like to make more designs suited to other countries. My plan is to save up enough money to get some T-shirts made and go to AnthroCon to see how they go.”

Saint Le Fur does have a selection of generic furry designs, such as the popular I (paw) NY illustration, that has already been seen in the United States at conventions and elsewhere. The creative team behind the company is always open to hearing about and seeing new design ideas for their apparel.

“Thinking of new ideas everyday and just jotting them down for future reference is amazing,” V said, admitting that relying on third-party manufacturers such as Street Shirts relinquishes control of the shirt quality, but not the designs. “We are soon to change this as we expand and sell more shirts. Right now we just aim to build up ground.”

Although Saint Le Fur is in its precarious early stages, V, like most upstart fashion designers, has lofty goals for his line.

“I’d like to have branded parties, fashion shows at conventions and having unknown artists within the fandom step up and collaborate with us,” described V on his eventual goals for Saint Le Fur. “In general though, I’d just like to see this company succeed and really see people wear our stuff and say it’s ‘pawesome!’”

To view Saint Le Fur’s current clothing line, visit their Street Shirts website at www.streetshirts.co.uk/SaintLeFur. For questions or more information, e-mail V at SaintLeFur@hotmail.co.uk.

Facebook Deleting ‘Non-Human’ Profiles

Furry News Network - Sat 7 May 2011 - 20:39

Facebook, you likely either love it or hate it. The social networking giant seems to have been conducting maintenance on its user accounts for a few years focused on accounts for pets or animals. Mainly this seems to be driven by the network’s security policies to keep users from hiding behind another personality and not showing a profile page.

Today some furs in the UK have been on Twitter saying that they have signed onto Facebook to find their accounts have been deleted. Most are assumed to have been using either fursona names or profile pictures of either their fursuit or character artwork.

Several groups have sprung up to petition against the site from taking down profiles which are based on pets (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=133690639974794&v=wall) and also other objects such as calculators and teddy bears (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2220851540&v=wall).

Although Facebook has no official policy regarding ‘non-human’ profile pages, the terms of the website ask that users “provide their real names and information” and also “not create more than one personal profile” (http://www.facebook.com/terms.php?ref=pf) which is common among some furs to separate personal and furry lives apart.

If you have an account on Facebook, might be recommended to check what your name is and if it sounds realistic and everyday. Also be aware if your profile photos are all of character art or a Fursuit you might be more likely to catch the web moderators attention.

[Edit: One solution is to create a real user account, and then create a "fan page" for your Fursona or character. ]

One of those whose account was deleted, Axle Fox, was able to get his restored by giving Facebook his real name.

Swedish police hunt for bank robber dressed as an animal

Furry News Network - Sat 7 May 2011 - 15:19

Police are searching for an armed robber dressed as a large furry animal who outran them after holding up a bank in the Swedish city of Gothenberg.

Swedish newspaper Gotebors-Posten (GP) reported that shots were fired as the unusually-attired perpetrator attempted to rob the bank, located in a large shopping center, late Friday.

“A man in a monkey outfit, or similar, may have been a bear, too, came running with security guards behind him. I thought it was a joke at first, a stunt, but then I walked past the bank and saw the shattered glass,” a witness told GP.

Around an hour after the robbery, police found a burning car near the crime scene. Investigations were continuing and no arrests had been made, they said.

New Japanese CGI

In-Fur-Nation - Sat 7 May 2011 - 01:57

Recently Cartoon Brew posted a new trailer for an upcoming Japanese animated film called Friends — Mononoke-jima no Naki (or Friends — Naki from Mononoke Island). According to various comments that follow the trailer, “the film is based on the Japanese fairytale “Naita Aka-oni,  or The Red Ogre who Cried”, where two ogres (or demons) – red ogre Naki and blue ogre Gunjo – find a human child, which starts off their adventure.” Various other creatures of Japanese myth and legend find their way into the adventure, including a kitsune. Though comparisons to Disney/Pixar’s film Monsters Inc. are obvious, according to reports the film is actually closer to Shrek – with a good amount of Duncan & Mallory and Dragonheart thrown in. The film was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, and it’s set to be released by Toho Studios this December.

Heavily armoured hounds — equipped with infrared night-sight cameras — have been used in the past by the top-secret unit.

The war dogs wear ballistic body armour that is said to withstand damage from single and double-edged knives, as well as protective gear which shields them from shrapnel and gunfire.

German Shepherds have been leading the way in SAS raids in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wearing oxygen masks, the pooches have been trained to jump from aircraft at 25,000ft, before seeking out insurgents in hostile environments.

Child Designs Wheelchair for Bunny

Furry News Network - Fri 6 May 2011 - 13:39

Author:
When the O’Rourke family of Tucson found a couple of Easter-time bunnies in their back yard, they knew right away that something wasn’t quite right.

There was a reason the mother rabbit abandoned them. Paul O’Rourke realized one bunny they named Joe had no use of his hind legs. Paul and his family helped nurse the bunnies back to health, but then they went one step further to help the paraplegic bunny.

Paul’s son Liam designed and built a small cart for Joe to help him move around a little easier. The red wagon with yellow wheels took some getting used to, but ultimately seemed to improve his mobility.

After Joe and his brother were feeling a bit better, the O’Rourke family took them to a wildlife rescue center.

Videos: Brainwave-Controlled Cat Ears “Necomimi”

furryne.ws - Fri 6 May 2011 - 04:19
Fursuiters! Read up! Sounds like a nice upgrade for your suits.

"We covered brainwave-controlled wheelchairs from Japan before, so why not brainwave-controlled cat ears, dubbed Necomimi? The wearer concentrates or sees something interesting and the ears stand up. And when you relax, your decreasing brain activity makes the ears fall down. No, I am not making this up."

Japanese company developing brainwave-controlled cat ears

Furry News Network - Fri 6 May 2011 - 02:32

Author: Higgs Raccoon

Neurowear is developing a pair of cat ears which respond to the brain activity of their wearer.

Called “necomimi”, the ears are mounted on a headband containing sensors, which pick up brain activity and move the ears accordingly. As the wearer concentrates, the ears point upwards, and when they relax the ears flop down and forwards.

New Furry paperback series set in Gamma World

Furry News Network - Thu 5 May 2011 - 23:32

Author: Fred

Amazon.com has entries for two new paperback novels published by Wizards of the Coast in the post-apocalyptic adventure-comedy D&D series “Gamma World” — a setting where “thousands of possible universes all condensed into a single reality”.

In “Sooner Dead” by Mel Odom, published in February: “A bio-engineered super-soldier named Hella and her mutant buffalo sidekick Stampede clash with armadillo bikers and inter-dimensional mutants across the ragged landscape of Gamma-Oklahoma.”

In “Red Sails in the Fallout” by Paul Kidd, to be published in July, two desert explorers named Shaani and Xoota – who seem from the cover picture to be anthropomorphic wallabies – “are followed home by a swarm of empathic earwigs.”
