The producer of the Rochester radio show The Breakfast Buzz contacted our office Wednesday, May 4th asking for information on the Furry Fandom. I had planned on just answering one or two questions, but the producer went ahead and put me on live with the shows morning hosts, Kimberly & Beck.

All of this was off the cuff and not rehearsed. I hope I didn’t embarrass the fandom.

One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that he had been changed into an adorable kitten.

The phenomenal success of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies inspired a massively popular literary-remix movement. Now Quirk Classics once again charts bold new territory, turning the monster-mash-up formula inside out to infuse Franz Kafka's horrific masterpiece, "The Metamorphosis," with the fuzziest, snuggliest, most adorable creatures possible: kittens!

Gregor Samsa is a humble young man who supports his unemployed parents and teenage sister by working as a traveling fabric salesman. But his life goes strangely wrong in the very first sentence of The Meowmorphosis, when he wakes up late for work and discovers that he has inexplicably become an adorable kitten.

His family must admit that, yes, their son is now OMG so cute—but what good is cute when there are bills to pay? How can Gregor be so selfish as to devote his attention to a ball of yarn? And how dare he jump out the bedroom window to wander through Kafka's literary landscape? Never before has a cat's tale been so poignant, strange, and horrifyingly funny.

You know, I've tried to hit on this furry angle before, when my rants sucked more (Most of them have since been deleted in favor of better ones).

And I came to the terms, with the assistance of a few good friends, that it's simply wrong for me to try to approach it in the manner I have in the past -- namely, trying to push the term "furry" further and further into the abyss of negativity, while distancing people like myself, who enjoy the milder forms of the fandom, from that negativity with terms like "anthro" or whatnot.

If that's still your bag, and you feel like that's how you have to deal with the obvious stereotyping problem that goes on among furries, more power to you -- but I'm gonna reword myself with this rant, and try to say what's really on my mind about the subject, and furthermore do my part to dispel stereotypes rather than hide from them...even though it's going to be like pissing in a sea of piss, and won't change much.


Here's my wager -- you are either going to really like this rant, or really hate it.

Either way, you're gonna...really.

Furry fandom has had more than its fair share of criticism, both from within and without. A Flayrah review of Shawn Keller's "Horrifying Look at the Furries" (2001) notes that Mr. Keller "associated furry with bestiality and pedophilia." A decade later, most of our critics do the same.

But the title was purposely provocative. This may come as a surprise, but I'm not talking about the furry fandom at all. Instead, I'm calling for more criticism of the furry genre.

This piece has three goals: to explain why criticism is needed, what kind of criticism, and finally to offer a few points of criticism as examples.

Heavily armoured hounds — equipped with infrared night-sight cameras — have been used in the past by the top-secret unit.
The war dogs wear ballistic body armour that is said to withstand damage from single and double-edged knives, as well as protective gear which shields them from shrapnel and gunfire.
German Shepherds have been leading the way in SAS raids in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wearing oxygen masks, the pooches have been trained to jump from aircraft at 25,000ft, before seeking out insurgents in hostile environments.

Nichole Cushing, author of “How To Eat Fried Furries” – a twisted book about raising Furries as a food source – dark humor at it’s strangest – is planning on donating her royalties for all book sales in May to the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library. Vonnegut was a prolific horror writer who’s career spanned over 50 years. He passes away in 2007 after a fall at his New York Brownstone.

So, I’m donating all of my royalties from May’s sales of How To Eat Fried Furries to the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, in hopes that it will give it some well-deserved attention and maybe even make a meaningful dent in their electric bill.  Every little bit helps, you know.   My friend Steve Lowe (another Hoosier author of weird fiction) has also lent his support to this effort, and will be doing a similar fundraiser in May.

In Franz Kafka’s classic 1915 short story The Metamorphosis, travelling salesman Gregor Samsa awakes one morning to find he has turned into a giant insect. In furry fandom, the story is often considered a pivotal work by lovers of transformation fiction.

The story is now being given a fluffy makeover in Cook Coleridge’s The Meowmorphosis. Instead of an insect, Samsa finds himself turned into an adorable kitten.

Published by Quirk Classics (whose previous mashup novels include Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Android Karenina), The Meowmorphosis will be available from May 10.

Amazon.com lists an August publication date (but publisher Baen Books says June) for “Exiled: Clan of the Claw, Book One”, a book containing three connected novellas by Harry Turtledove, John Ringo & Jody Lynn Nye, and S. M. Stirling.

The book is set in a fantasy alternate universe without humans where:

… the Mrem Clan of the Claw and its sister warbands … face the Lishkash, masters of a cold-blooded empire of slave armies and magic.

Recently stumbled across: Miranda and the Tiger’s Eye, by Sara Beacham. “Miranda’s adventure begins with a gift and a wish. The gift, from a collector’s shop in India, is a special stone that fell from a statue stolen long ago. The stone, called a tiger’s eye, is said to have magical powers. Amazon.com lists the price for a used copy of out-of-print short-story anthology “Best in Show: Fifteen Years of Outstanding Furry Fiction“ as $ 348.33.

“Best in Show” won two Ursa Major awards for 2003, for Best Anthropomorphic Other Literary Work and Best Anthropomorphic Published Illustration.

Ed: The anthology was reprinted without interior illustrations as “Furry!: The World’s Best Anthropomorphic Fiction“, currently available for a far more reasonable $ 11.08.

EDITORIAL
It is rare that I find a video that I feel needs to be shared whether is is news or not.  In this case, I came across this video today, and feel the content is something many in the Furry fandom can benefit from.

The video is written, and produced by PyroFox (PyroFox04 on YouTube).  While the tone is loud and gruff, the message is clear. [Warning - Strong language]

PLEASE HELP BY SHARING THE LINK!

The 2010 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for graphic novels was awarded to Adam Hines for “Duncan the Wonder Dog: Show One,” his tale of an animal-world uprising.

The book, set in a world where animals can talk, chronicles the plight of the furry and feathered souls who chafe under the cruel hand of human dominion. The judges praised “Duncan” as a “powerful, prodigious work about the question of who the world belongs to, with an incredibly strong, original visual and narrative aesthetic.”
