Furries: Serious Business

Furry News Network - Wed 4 May 2011 - 18:28

EDITORIAL
It is rare that I find a video that I feel needs to be shared whether is is news or not.  In this case, I came across this video today, and feel the content is something many in the Furry fandom can benefit from.

The video is written, and produced by PyroFox (PyroFox04 on YouTube).  While the tone is loud and gruff, the message is clear. [Warning - Strong language]

PLEASE HELP BY SHARING THE LINK!

You know, I’ve tried to hit on this furry angle before, when my rants sucked more (Most of them have since been deleted in favor of better ones).

And I came to the terms, with the assistance of a few good friends, that it’s simply wrong for me to try to approach it in the manner I have in the past — namely, trying to push the term “furry” further and further into the abyss of negativity, while distancing people like myself, who enjoy the milder forms of the fandom, from that negativity with terms like “anthro” or whatnot.

If that’s still your bag, and you feel like that’s how you have to deal with the obvious stereotyping problem that goes on among furries, more power to you — but I’m gonna reword myself with this rant, and try to say what’s really on my mind about the subject, and furthermore do my part to dispel stereotypes rather than hide from them…even though it’s going to be like pissing in a sea of piss, and won’t change much.

Here’s my wager — you are either going to really like this rant, or really hate it.

Either way, you’re gonna…really.

You can post responses to Pyro on his YouTube page here

Red Lantern Comic

furryne.ws - Wed 4 May 2011 - 13:42
I thought at 1st is was going to be some weird furry spin on the whole Green Lantern stuff. I was wrong. We still get a high-quality furry comics.

"On a small, isolated island run by ruthless gangs and powerful crime families lies a town of brothels and drug dens, serving all who come into port. The natural barrier of the sea makes escape for anyone nearly impossible, and most live out their lives with no hope of buying their freedom from the oppressive hyena gangs that own them.

Amon is one such indentured servant. Sold into the life from a young age, he's passed his 30th year, and approaching the end of his usefulness to his Madame. With far too much left to repay to earn his freedom, his outlook is bleak. And then, he is given the humiliating task of training his replacement, a young, exotic tiger whose naivete and innocence make his indoctrination into the brothel life even more difficult.

War rages in the waters surrounding the small Shanivaar islands, and naval soldiers are spilling into port in droves. Could these foreigners be the salvation the captive workers so gravely need, or do they bring nothing but danger from abroad?"

Author: Higgs Raccoon

duncan-the-wonder-dog-cover.jpgThe 2010 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes were awarded on Friday (April 29, 2011), in a ceremony at the Chandler Auditorium of the Los Angeles Times in California, USA. Amongst the winners, the award for graphic novels went to Adam Hines for the anthropomorphic tale Duncan the Wonder Dog: Show One.

Upon receiving the award, Hines, 27, said “I started working on this book back in 2002 when I was 18, and only just finished last March, and that’s a long time to work on something that you don’t know will be of any good use to anyone”. He also stated that he is already working on the second book in what he plans to be a nine-volume epic: “I’ll be working on these books until I’m 70″.

“Chitchester Gap” by Sedric and “Vignette from the Highway” by Lycanthromancer

Furry News Network - Wed 4 May 2011 - 11:35

Author: toonces

We’ve got a pair of surreal stories to discuss, today. Sedric’s “Chitchester Gap” presents a fantasy scenario, a public seduction by a doppelganger minus the goatee. And “Vignette from the Highway” by Lycanthromancer presents a symbolic, even cryptic fragment for the reader to digest and interpret. And also Toonces asks Skip if he can slob his own knob. Tune in for that, too.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Formic Hivemind indicted by grand jury

Furry News Network - Wed 4 May 2011 - 10:31

Richard Kretovic aka Formic Hivemind

Author: Higgs Raccoon

Formic Hivemind, charged in April with sexually abusing a boy he met over the internet, has been indicted on nineteen charges by a Monroe County grand jury.

It is alleged that Formic Hivemind (the online alias of 19-year-old Richard J. Kretovic) abused the 12-year-old boy after meeting him through Xbox Live. The indictments handed down by the grand jury are for nine counts each of the felonies of first-degree criminal sexual acts and second-degree sexual abuse, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Kretovic is currently free on $ 50,000 bail. A date for his appearance in Monroe County Court or the state Supreme Court has yet to be set.

[Updated 5/4/2011 - 5:00pm]

From WHEC News:

Kretovic’s lawyer talked about him today.

“Richard is a young man with a long history of intellectual and emotional disabilities and we’re exploring what role that may have played in bringing him before the court today,” Steve Leonardo said.

Leonardo says that might be a factor in the defense for his client. The case was waived to a grand jury.

Hoodwinked Too Film Verdict

05/02/2011
By: CraftyAndy

hoodwinked2titleIt’s a poor man’s Shrek. Rent it at the most, watch it with friend preferably make a drinking game out of it. Thankfully you can’t do it involving puns but could get a buzz off of pop culture references. It wasn’t nearly as bad as the trailer made it look. Some jokes were reworked for the better or removed entirely.

Indyfurcon 2011: Furries of the Lost Ark

Furry News Network - Tue 3 May 2011 - 00:11

Indyfurcon 2011

About the Convention INDYFURCON

IndyFurCon is Indiana’s first convention for fans of anthropomorphic creatures and art. iFC is to be held in the state capital, Indianapolis. Held in the late summer, it gives midwestern furries an event filled weekend to get together with friends and have fun in the middle of the 5 month period that separates Anthrocon and Midwest FurFest.

MORE INFO

WHOOZFUR INC

Whoozfur is derived from the word Hoosier which is the nickname of Indiana natives. years ago, Whoozfur became the unofficial name given to furries in Indiana in 1998 when the internet based social group was created, and still is to this day. We thought it only fitting for the parent company to run IndyFurCon to be named Whoozfur Inc. Founded in 2009, Whoozfur Inc is a non profit 501(c)7 corporation. It’s soul purpose is to organize and produce a convention annualy to showcase anthropomorphic art, creatures, and education. THE MASCOTS

This convention celebrates Indiana. The cardinal is Indiana’s state bird. Our buffalo is from the state seal. Basketball is a long time heritage to many hoosiers. The Indianapolis Colts recently were Super Bowl champions, which is the reason for the football the buffalo holds. The colors of their jerseys are the official state colors from the flag and are also the colors of the Indiana Pacers.

Guest of Honor

The guest of honor for iFC 2011 has been announced:

Tincrash

Noel “Tincrash” Melendez is a furry and transformation artist who works primarily with color or monochrome pencils and inks. He’s been drawing since grade school when he would trace artwork out of comic books where he focused on characters like Optimus Prime and the horse alien from Power Pack. From there he grew to freehand drawing his favorite comic book characters, which started to shift to more anthropomorphic characters in the mid 80′s. By the early 90′s his comic interests, and thus his art, had focused primarily on anthro characters and their stories, which tended to be more light-hearted than the super hero comics of the time. By then he was drawing wholly original characters, such as his fursnona, Tincrash the raccoon.

Science Fiction and Fantasy have always been large influences in his life, and he has been attending Sci-Fi conventions since he was in high school. He has yet to miss a Midwest Furfest, and has attended several other furry conventions where he can often be found in their artist alleys if he’s not in the dealer’s rooms selling commissions for badges, sketchbook, or lose bristol board drawings. Collecting art from his favorite artists, both at conventions and online, has also become one of his driving passions.

Transformation has also been an ongoing fascination and inspiration for Noel. He loves to investigate, through his drawings, the process of a person’s form changing from whatever they were to whatever they might become; but he also enjoys seeing how the person might adapt or deal with being something they weren’t. Constantly drawing transformations has imbued his art with tight, but easy anatomy and fluid poses for an overall cartoony style. However, contrary to most transformation work, his subjects almost universally enjoy, even relish, their transformations unless his commissioners prefer the subject to experience some other emotions.

Charity

For 2010, iFC chose the Exotic Feline Rescue Center, for which we raised over $1000.

For 2011, we have selected another excellent Indianapolis-based charity to support:

Southside Animal Shelter Logo

The mission of Southside Animal Shelter is to rescue healthy and treatable dogs and cats at risk of euthanasia, nurture and restore them to happy healthy lives in loving homes, and reserve euthanasia for those animals, in a veterinarian’s professional opinion, who are in a state of terminal suffering or have been determined aggressive. Southside Animal Shelter is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization which receives no government funding from the City of Indianapolis, Marion County, or the State of Indiana.

For more information about Southside Animal Shelter, please visit their website. We also encourage anyone that is able to help them out, whether volunteering (if you’re local), donating (even if you aren’t coming to the con), or even giving a loving home to one of their cats or dogs.

Yes, You Can Get Leprosy From an Armadillo

furryne.ws - Mon 2 May 2011 - 21:09
Editor's note: I have an alt' that's a armadillo. This news will make for some interesting role-playing scenarios.

For years, scientists have speculated that armadillos can pass on leprosy to humans, and that they are behind the few dozen cases of the disease that occur in the U.S. every year. Now, they have evidence. A genetic study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that U.S. armadillos and human patients share what seems to be a unique strain of the bacterium that causes leprosy.

Internet Porn Has Transformed Sexual Desire, Study Finds

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 20:39

Via Fox News

A new book, which analyzes a billion web searches from around the world, highlights the way in which the Internet apparently revolutionized sexual desires, making tastes once regarded as deviant more widespread.

A Billion Wicked Thoughts,” by Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam, is billed as the first massive research in the field of collective sexual identity since the Kinsey Reports in the mid-20th century, the New York Post reported.

According to the authors’ research, straight men enjoy a wider variety of erotica than previously thought, including sites devoted to elderly women and transsexuals.

The findings also indicated that straight men prefer heavy women to thin ones and that straight women enjoy reading about and watching romances between two men. Gay men were found to enjoy straight porn in large numbers.

“Sex therapists haven’t known which interests are common and which are rare,” co-author Ogas said. “We probably now know more than ever before … we just let the data tell us where to go.”

Bronyville Episode 002 – Friendship is Not Getting Kicked off the Internet

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 16:36

Author: AppleCider

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today we learned that friendship needs a little bit of tolerance. You may not agree with somepony but that doesn’t mean its okay to exclude them. Also, we found that our community is filled with very warm and caring individuals willing to reach out in their time of need. And finally, we realized that there are no Big Lots in all of Texas selling the little ponies and we should just stop trying.

Sincerely,
Bronyville.
