What Are Fursuits?If you’re a furry or you know anything about the furry fandom then you probably know what a fursuit is, but just in case you don’t here’s a brief explanation. Fursuits are custom-made animal costumes, sometimes full body, sometimes partial, worn by furries that represent their fursona. Much like a cosplayer, furries will dress up in these suits when attending things like furry conventions and meetups to show off their work. A lot of fursuiters even make their suits themselves and therefore have even more reason to show off their hard work. The best comparison I can make for someone who has no clue what a fursuit is would have to be those mascots that come out and dance during NFL games. Imagine those, but people spend weeks, sometimes even months, making it themselves to suit their every creative desire.
How Much Is The Average Fursuit?
As you could imagine when it comes to something so labor intensive, not everyone has the time nor the know-how to make one themself, and therefore the people who can and do make fursuits drive a big price tag for their work. The cost of a fursuit can vary widely depending on a lot of factors such as the type of suit you want, what parts of the suit you want, what details you want to be added to the suit, etc. The most expensive fursuit sold was priced at around $23,000.
However, that’s an unrealistic price for most people and on average a fursuit can cost anywhere between $3000 and $4000. While that does sound like a lot you have to consider that you are paying not only for the supplies to make them but the time it takes to make them as well as the patience and skill to make them.

Then What’s A Digitigrade Fursuit?
To the untrained eye, a digitigrade fursuit may just look like any other fursuit, but I can assure you that there is a difference. A digitigrade fursuit refers to a fursuit that has padding in the thighs and feet. This is to make the suit look more animal-like as it makes the wearer look like they are standing on just their digits. The name comes from the word digitigrade which literally refers to animals that walk on their toes. This trait of legs can be seen in animals like canines, felines, and even some dinosaurs.
As well as this, the hands of the suit are typically made puffier to resemble the paws of an animal just like the feet. In essence, the point of a digitigrade suit is to bare the most similarities with an animal while remaining slightly cartoonish.
It’s a super cool trick that really brings a suit to life and makes it stand out from all the other suits out there.

How Much Is A Digitigrade Fursuit?As cool as digitigrade suits are, all that extra padding comes at a cost. This padding means that more foam has to be put into the suit which makes it significantly more expensive than a standard fursuit. If you’re buying a digitigrade fursuit you can expect to be paying about an additional $500 – $1000 so in total around $5000 when buying with sites like Lemonbrat.
All hope is not lost though. Sites like koshkafursuits.com start their pricing at around $2400 for digitigrade suits and while it is likely to go up a lot from that, it is nowhere near $5000.

What’s The Difference Between Digitigrade and Plantigrade Fursuits?
Now that we understand what a digitigrade fursuit is, there’s a chance you may have also heard of a plantigrade fursuit. At first glance, you may think the name is in reference possible to the eco-friendly nature of the suit or maybe it’s a bio-degradable suit. Both are wrong, it has nothing to do with plants or the environment.
Plantigrade suits are essentially the opposite of digitigrade suits, the name similarly deriving from the word plantigrade which refers to mammals that walk on their whole foot as opposed to just their toes. This is a trait that can be seen in humans, any primate, kangaroos, rabbits, and others. This is important as most fursuits are actually plantigrade suits. This just means that they are an outline of the person covered in fur, no extra padding or adjustments made to bear similarities to an animal. This also makes it one of the most affordable full-body suits that you can buy if you are looking to buy a fursuit.

Where Can I Buy A Digitigrade Fursuit?Any fursuit maker that offers full-body suits very likely offers digitigrade suits, but to save you the hassle of searching we’ve compiled a list of the best places for you to get your very own digitigrade fursuit.
The aforementioned Lemonbrat is probably the biggest seller in the fursuit marketplace. Although their prices aren’t the most affordable, they are the most reliable and easiest to work with out of any fursuit provider you will find out there. They also cater to almost every niche and this includes digitigrade fursuits.
This is yet another site we previously mentioned but it is worth reiterating that they are an affordable seller that actually offers digitigrade fursuits. It’s hard enough to come by a fursuit seller, so to tick all the boxes of being a fursuit seller, an affordable fursuit seller, and a digitigrade fursuit seller is too good to pass up.
While this isn’t traditionally a fursuit-selling site, they have definitely come into their own as a platform for fursuit makers to offer their service to the fandom. Etsy has some super talented artists on here including some who can make you a digitigrade fursuit and this way you can ensure that 100% of the profits are actually going to the maker of the fursuit.
Unlike the previous sites on this short list, The Dealer’s Den doesn’t actually allow you to make commissions. The Dealer’s Den is instead a marketplace for users to sell their pre-owned fursuits. However, in these many fursuits, you will very likely be able to find a digitigrade fursuit.

What Other Types Of Fursuits Are There?Fursuits don’t just stop at plantigrade and digitigrade though, there are several other types of fursuits that you can find. For example, there are quad-suits. These are suits that are designed to enable their wearer to walk around on all fours. These are probably one of the less common fursuits you’ll see but they for sure exist.
As well as this there are also unguligrade suits which make the suit resemble that of a hoofed animal like a horse or a rhino. This is achieved by making the hands and feet of the suit a lot more cylindrical and flatter at the sole.
It’s safe to say that fursuiting has been around for a while, whether the suits have been digitigrade, plantigrade, protogen, or whatever, but when was the very first fursuit made? Believe it or not, the first “fursuit” (or concept of it) dates as far back as 1947! This was a German Sheperd suit that appeared in Edwin Corle’s book Three Ways To Mecca and played a pivotal role in the novel.
Okay, but you’re not satisfied with that, you want when the very first physical fursuit was made. This dates about 40 years after Edwin Corle’s book, at the first Confurence: Confuerence 0 in 1989. There, appeared the former Disney Mascot wearer Robert Hill in a fursuit based on the character Hilda the Bambioid.

Like this, from Animation World Network: “Reindeer in Here, a one-hour animated holiday special, is based on the children’s book of the same name, written by Adam Reed (Archer, Sealab 2021)… It seems Reed has perfected the art of writing for children as well as crafting edgy adult animated humor… Reindeer in Here follows Blizzard (Blizz), a young reindeer from the North Pole, who (similar to Rudolph), is different: He has one antler that is smaller than the other. However, his unique feature doesn’t stop him and his misfit friends from saving Christmas, creating a family tradition, and showing Santa how his inventions can improve Christmas.” So when and where is this headed? “Reindeer in Here will premiere on CBS November 29, 2022 following the network’s traditional showing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the 1964 classic.” Oh.

More recent news from Animation World Network: “King Features Syndicate announced development of a new animated film inspired by interactive children’s comic strip, Slylock Fox… The film will follow the Sherlock-Holmes-esque detective Slylock Fox and his devoted sidekick, Max Mouse, as they match wits against a cast of eccentric villains. Ah yes, the question that has left our greatest minds scratching their heads in confusion as they try to solve what appears to be an almost unsolvable puzzle, what is the difference between Furry and Anthro?
All jokes aside, if you’re new to the furry fandom you might have heard the term anthro before and if you know anything about them, you are likely confused by the need for the term furry if anthro already exists.
What Is Anthro?
For those who are unaware, anthro derives from the word anthropomorphism and refers to the attribution of human characteristics to an animal. It gets thrown around a lot in the fandom and it always feels unclear what people are referring to when they say it. Sometimes people use it to refer to a fursona like “that’s cool anthro art” and it’s even been used to describe furries. The thing is, if we are looking at the exact definition of each word, they technically shouldn’t be used interchangeably.
Where Did The Word Anthro Come From?
The term anthro likely derives from the term anthropomorphism meaning “the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a God, animal or object” (according to Oxford Languages). It derives from an ancient Greek term anthrōpmorphos, anthrōp meaning “human being” and morphos meaning, well… morphous. It’s hard to date when the term Anthro was coined in the context of anthropomorphic creatures but if anthropomorphism dates back as far as ancient Greece it must be some indication.
This is not to be confused with the term anthropology which refers to the “study of human societies and cultures and their development” or rather the study of what makes humans humans.

What Is A Furry?While we do have a whole article dedicated to explaining what they are and a brief history of them, we’ll give you a quick summary anyway.
Furries are people who are interested in or fascinated by cartoon animals. This interest is often expressed through the creation of what is known as a fursona. Fursonas are anthropomorphic, cartoon animals, made to in some way, shape or form resemble its creator or a desire of theirs. Not all furries have a fursona but this doesn’t mean that they are not a furry, they may not be interested in making one or may justin ot have the time or money to make one or have one made for them. A bit of an oversimplification, I’ll admit, but this is just for the sake of wrapping your head around what each thing is.

Where Did The Word Furry Come From?In contrast to anthro, we actually have a lot more information about the etymology of the term furry and its history. For one, it is thought to have originated from a science convention in 1980, however the actual fandom predates the name itself, finding its roots in the 1970s underground comix movement which was a provocative comic publication that would put out explicit comics of animals that resembled humans.
However the term “furry” and “furry fandom” wasn’t being used until around 1983 in fanzine but by 1990 had risen to popularity and became the standard name of the fandom. So in short, the term anthro probably predates the term furry.

What’s The Difference?
Anthro is a word used to categorize or describe animals that are given human-like qualities. This is why you don’t really see many monkey fursonas as monkeys are already kind of human-like by nature. However, furry is a much broader term used to describe people interested in anthro art and cartoon animals in general. If I were to describe someone who is overly enthusiastic about Universal Pictures’ The Bad Guys, I would likely describe them as a furry, chances are I wouldn’t describe them as an anthro.
If you were to google fursuit, you’d likely be met with a bunch of images of actual people in actual wolf suits. Now try googling anthro suits. If you can’t be bothered to do that I’ll just tell you now, you’re probably going to see almost the opposite of a fursuit. You’ll be met with a bunch of drawings of animals in human suits (like a 3 piece suit, not a suit that makes them look like a human, although that is the intention). The point is, furry and anthro do not mean the same thing. One is used to describe a group of people and the other is what those people are a fan of.

How Do I Become A Furry?Becoming a furry isn’t some phase of transformation that you can achieve by doing the secret jutsus, it’s more something a person identifies as. If you just say “I’m a furry”, then hey presto, you are now a furry, how you express this is completely up to you. Some furries are a lot more closeted and private about being a furry, operating under different pseudonyms and being careful not to tie their name to their fursona. Others, however, wear it on their chest loud and proud, going to conventions with personal badges of their fursona.
Can I Become An Anthro?
Becoming an anthro is not really something you can do, it doesn’t make any sense. Unless you are referring to literally turning part animal, it is more likely what you mean to say is you want to become a furry or someone is a furry. An anthro is more used to describe the characters that furries are interested in, the things that make furries furries.

Does The Difference Matter?However, does it really matter at the end of the day? While this article does come across as a very “pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose” correction, it’s not super important that you distinguish the difference between the two. If you were to use one in place of the other in conversation with another furry, chances are, they’ll know what you’re talking about. This article is more for people looking to get into the fandom, who don’t quite understand what people are talking about when they say buzzwords like “anthro”, “protogen”, etc.

But here it is, right from Animation World Network: “Emmy Award winner Tim Long (The Simpsons) has been signed to write, executive produce, and showrun Fox’s Bloom County, an animated series based on the acclaimed comic strip of the same name, created and written by Berkeley Breathed, who will also executive produce.” In case you need a reminder: “The comic Bloom County evolved from Breathed’s first published comic strip, The Academia Waltz, which originally appeared in The Daily Texan, the student newspaper at the University of Texas. This work led The Washington Post to recruit Breathed for a nationally syndicated strip; Bloom County debuted in 1980, appearing in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide until its end in 1989.” No word yet on a release date.

Fur Affinity bans AI-generated art, but AI has a plot to return.

AI art tools made me think of a term: sequential juxtaposition acceleration.
An AI tool starts with scraping millions of pre-made images from the net. That’s a learning set to combine and interpolate. Prompt it with key words (green grass, old building), and you get approximations of everything that matches. One could call this a form of cheating artists, because people don’t like the scraping of pre-made sources without permission. But after they combine, the output is nothing that ever existed. That’s doing what any artist does to learn from reference, but in a wholesale, industrial way that wasn’t envisioned by the current creative property system.
Back to that problem in a minute, but first think about art context.
Collage is a method of using pre-made images. 100 years ago, Dada and Surrealist artists started cutting pictures out of print media and juxtaposing them for a sense of irony or the uncanny. Conceptual art came from “readymades” of industrially made but recontextualized objects. (Consider the irrational sensation of trying to use a furry teacup.) Warhol continued the process with industrial pop art. Suddenly, art rendering mattered less than ideas.
If AI art was only for derivative copies, there wouldn’t be more to say; but recontextualizing is a skill too, and accelerating it is powerful for an artist.
Here’s a silly example: juxtapose Barney the Dinosaur with H.R. Giger. An artist can draw it, but for a low-effort meme type thing, why not use a tool and spend the time on more original things?
Now do it 1000 times and play it back sequentially with editing and music. That’s effort. You can make a unique, trippy aesthetic unlike anything else. Wizardhead is creating cool videos like that with metal music (fair warning, this is a little gross):

Speaking of copyright issues for AI learning sets, let’s compare them to sampling pre-made music. When new tech for music sampling emerged in the 1980’s, it was controversial, but made a golden period for a genre of hip hop with acts like Public Enemy. But copyright tightened up and unregulated sampling made it hard to access:

In 1989, obtaining the permission of musical copyright holders for the use of their intellectual property was often an afterthought. There was little precedent for young artists’ mining their parents’ record collections for source material and little regulation or guidelines for that process.
It’s culturally important, right? Another music comparison is mashups with DJ’s and clubs doing popular live parties. The music industry also changed with tech for downloading and sharing until streaming came in. It makes me wonder if AI art may take a role in the culture like that, and how the artists would count.

The Furaffinity ban made mainstream news in Vice
. It echoed my thoughts last week… a ban is probably smart so a niche, independent site doesn’t get flooded with unoriginal and derivative content. But I don’t think the tools are useless for skilled users; and it probably won’t keep them out of the culture.
It made me ask a friend about using the tech to remaster old media that’s hard to watch, like cartoons and games in low resolution – and I learned that there’s already a scene for that.
Thirsty furries take note: you can probably generate all-adult versions of beloved animation.
The FurAffinity ban points to signatures from reference art in the learning set as a reason, saying the approximate signatures show copying:

AI art is a damn good *learning* tool, but it's taking everything it does from artists. It leeches on the time, effort, skill, energy an artist put into their work.

The examples I saw weren’t signatures. They were glitches in the place those go. Is anyone confused about those being someone else’s work? This reminds me of how the Cats movie was edited to remove accidental “buttholes”… isn’t that a bit of over-analyzing?
Job security for artists seems like the other big worry besides quality and control. Cameras didn’t kill painting; they made jobs for photographers. Stock art and news illustrations generated by AI could possibly go into direct competition with illustrators. But they still need to generate from recognizable styles, don’t they?
From running a nonprofit news site paid out of pocket, there are no jobs here, just need. Nobody would be unemployed if this site had a button to generate something free matching the text, and although they can generate whole stories too, they can’t do that for research (and furry panache.)
If you oppose AI art, maybe your art can be kept out of it, but Big Data may change the culture before you even realize it. Just look for your house on Google Maps; they already have the photo and you probably use their product. We’re looking at a map of uncharted territory.

One of the biggest and broadest questions surrounding furries, apart from what furries are altogether, is what a furry fetish is. There is a recurring misconception that the word furry has inherently sexual connotations which draws many people to the question of what a furry fetish is. Before we dive into the ins and outs of this fairly complex definition, let’s clarify that furries and fursuits are not synonymous with having a furry fetish, in fact, a fraction of furries actually have a furry fetish.
What Qualifies As A Fetish?
A fetish, as defined by Merriam-Webster is either an object or body part regardless of its presence being real or fantasized, that is necessary to grant a person sexual gratification. In some cases this could be classed even as a sexual obsession however that is typically in the most severe cases of a fetish. With this in mind, it should be a lot easier to understand what classifies something as a furry fetish.
What Makes It A Furry Fetish?
Because of the breadth of the term “furry”, a furry fetish is more a spectrum of things that can grant sexual gratification rather than one specific thing like in the case of a foot fetish for example. Instead a furry fetish is characterized by whether or not an anthropomorphic character, be it a person in a fursuit or a cartoon on a screen, is bringing the person in question sexual pleasure. Their sexual interests and entire sexual identity doesn’t have to revolve around the idea of furries for it to be considered a furry fetish, as long as its in their catalogue of things that brings them that special joy.

So Do They Roleplay As Animals In Bed?It’s easy to just think, well furries are people who like cartoon animals, surely if they have a furry fetish they just pretend to be animals in the bedroom but it’s a bit more intricate than that. Because if that were the case, that would just be pet play, which is a completely different thing. While pet play may be involved in what they do in the bedroom, this wouldn’t necessarily mean they had a furry fetish. Instead their fetish would be characterized by whether or not an actual anthropomorphic character or suit was involved in whatever it is they’re getting up to.
So in short, yes they might roleplay as animals in bed, but this doesn’t inherently make them furry fetishisers.

Does Having A Furry Fetish Make You A Furry?
It certainly feels like an indication of something if you have a furry fetish however, having a furry fetish doesn’t necessarily make you a furry. I know it sounds ridiculous, but in the same way that watching hentai doesn’t automatically make you a weeb, getting sexual satisfation from the idea of furries doesn’t automatically make you yourself a furry.

Are All Furries Fetishisers?
This is something that simply cannot be stressed enough and is reiterated time and time again, but we’ll say it once more for the sake of clarification. NOT ALL FURRIES HAVE A FURRY FETISH. There is no denying that certain members of the fandom definitely have a furry fetish and will act as such, but to put all furries into this same box, makes the fandom sound like a bunch of perverts which simply isn’t the case. The furry fandom is one of the most inclusive and accepting communities you’ll find, but the sexual stigma tied to them makes it a lot harder for them to grow as many people are intimidated or put off by it.

How Many People Have A Furry Fetish?
This is a tough one. It’s hard to say exactly how many people actually have a furry fetish but with a bit of research we can get an idea. If we look at one of the highest ranking porn sites’ traffic under the search terms “furry porn” we can start to get a better idea of the grand scope of the furry fetish. Pornhub’s volume for furry porn is in the ballpark of 400,000 clicks a month. This is not to imply that every single one of those searches is a person with a furry fetish but it definitely highlights just how many people may have a furry fetish. With this in mind, if we were to say that only 25% of the people actually had a furry fetish that would still make 100,000 people with a furry fetish. Then if we narrow this even further and say that 80% of these people are actually furries that would mean that only around 80,000 of the possible 1 million members of the fandom have a furry fetish.
Of course that math is shoddy in a thousand different ways but the point stands that furry fetishes are pretty popular.

Furry Book Month Novel Pack – Call For Submissions
Hi everyone!
I’m delighted to announce that for Furry Book Month we intend to have a story bundle available for purchase – the first that the FWG has produced. If this goes well, it will hopefully be the first of more to come.
To populate this novel bundle, we are accepting submissions to be included for the next two weeks – until September 25th.
To qualify, the story and author must fulfil a few criteria.
The author must be a member of the Furry Writers Guild.
The story must be self-published.
The story must be a novel.
The story must be a stand-alone or first in a series (no sequels).
The story must be furry.
The story must be for general audience (no erotica this time).
In the future, should we run more story bundles, we will look into what we can do in conjunction with our wonderful furry publishers to include works published by them. Authors who retain the rights to their published novels as ebooks may submit. We can also look into erotica stories being included, but for the first to test the waters we wanted to keep the potential audience as wide as possible.
All contributing authors will receive an equal share of the proceeds from this story bundle, in addition to a share going towards the Furry Writers Guild. Depending on numbers received, we may need to curate the total list, as we are aiming for approximately 10 novels in the bundle.
