Comic-Con International, the non-profit organization which sponsors San Diego Comic Con, the Alternate Press Expo, Pro-Con, and the Comic Book Expo, has entered into an agreement to acquire the comic convention WonderCon.

WonderCon, which bills itself as "northern California's largest and longest-running comics convention," is currently owned by partners Mike Friedrich and Joe Field. WonderCon was first produced in 1987. WonderCon 15 occurred last month in Oakland.

The press release at the WonderCon site includes several quotes from Friedrich and Field about how this is a good move for the convention and will allow them to pursue other interests. Friedrich and Field have agreed to serve as consultants to the event.
