Here's a neat article that shows how close some breed are to wolves.
It also states that even though canine genes are almost totally consistant, the slight variation might allow folks with pups of mixed breeds to specifically know what breeds are in the "mix".

I am so glad to learn that Shar Peis are closer to wolves than we thought. Bleah, breed them back to normal!
