SoFurry back online after six months downtime

On January 10th SoFurry released a post indicating that they are back online for the first time since early July of 2025. During this downtime they had moved servers and finalized updating so that the new Beta version will now fully replace the original style of the site. The beta will remain in place until bugs are fleshed out with the public transition.

I'm very happy to see it finally back. But I was never a fan of the new site design. With it still being in beta, it's hard to know what is final and what will still change. I've come up with about 16 tickets I need to submit to them now. Many are suggestions but a few are bugs or missing options that would be easy to add.

6 months is a bit of an excessive amount of time needed to move servers and upgrade. I reckon something else might have contributed to the downtime.
I hope there was no hardware failure or security faults somewhere in there that caused the website to stay offline for so long.
From what has been said it seems to be the fact that those running and responsible for the up time of the furry fan site are "over-employed" so they don't have much free time to work to resolve surprise issues. People offered money, but it wasn't a money issue.
Given the 50+ hours I have to dedicate to my own job, it can be quite a lift. People with skills to run a site like these are usually valuable to their employers, and as such it can be hard to really push things through with the fleeting spare time they have.
Shifting things so that the beta site could be handled by all users also probably needed to be handled, and was forced here.
Not really, they had a working site before the 6 month downtime but didn't want to save the old site and instead force the new site on people which had never been popular in all the years they were trying to push it.
Many are saying the longer downtime was a ploy so they could force the new SFX on people without blowback as after being staved for 6 months people would take anything, even a site they hated for years while it was in beta.
This is backed up by the staff censoring people, banning anyone who says anything bad about the site, blocking people on Sofurry servers on Discord, Bluesky, X and Reddit while taking all feedback that used to be public and locking it behind a report system that is fully private.
They gave one stat when SFX first went live saying "we hit 3000" which it hasn't managed to hit again since and has dropped to 2600 and then 1800 according to third party trackers. The fact the only numbers they gave are over 4 and half months old and they turned off live tracking points to them hiding the true numbers.
Keep in mind SF 2.0 managed 10k at it's peak.
The fact is even without banning people for criticizing the new SF they are losing numbers. The site is depressing to use, harder to navigate and slower at times than the old site.
Missing key features. All these years in beta both public and private for them to ignore every bit of feedback they didn't like to now scramble trying to change a site less people like.
They would've been better off keeping the old site running even at greater cost until they could make a replacement worthy of it.
If they wanted to change something they would've been better training the staff to do their jobs right rather than ignore trolling.
Toumal should be ashamed of himself as this is the same thing he did with SF 1.0 all those years ago, he forced a new site on people that no one wanted and it cost him.
He's done the same thing again only this time he's let people know he isn't listening.
Toumal made the site a toxic place to work so most decent staff left.
He will blame this on people who talk smack about SF driving staff away but his own leadership style or lack off with him being a diva means most competent people left as they could work for other sites, he was only left with the rejects that other sites refuse to take who are clueless or like being able to boss others around as they can't do that in real life. The trolling on SF and the redesigns every time he got bored along with unrealistic goals made it that anyone who could left. He's understaffed due to his own actions. He turned sofurry into a train wreak just being an overgrown brat.
The site is crap for what it is it. People mainly care about the 20 years of content rather then the new site. Missing key features and a UI that isn't fit for the job doomed the SFX to fail just like SF 1. If it wasn't for the historical content SFX wouldn't be getting a second look now.
The staff were told for years SF next and SFX was disliked and just ignored all negative feedback like they always do when they mess up and even removing comments they don't agree with. Toumal is worse than Dragoneer ever was. If Toumal really cared he would've kept the new site closer in design to SF 2 then fixed the core problems of Sofurry which is the useless staff and trolls that stalk the site. Toumal has done the same thing he did in the past and listened only to the "yes" men.
4 months online and the numbers still are going down and the only thing on the raise is the breakdowns. Toumal just bans people who say anything bad about SFX running the site like Nazi Germany. Flayrah really needs to do a full story on the new site, the people Toumal hurt and Toumal himself. Neer got called out for less.
Sofurry X is a dead site, the staff were told it was a failure years ago long before they retired 2.0 but they ignored it and every warning because they were too arrogant to listen.
Sofurry 2.0 was like an athlete that was turned to a paraplegic with Sofurry X.
Terra and Toumal rave on about saving the site saying it is still alive but it is only a shadow of what it was. The mind of Sofurry being the content is mostly still there so alive, the body however is dead as they trashed the site, gutted the design and scrapped features that it needed.
They make out people still use it yet only a fraction of those who used the old site. X get the same number of uploads in a week that 2.0 got in an afternoon.
People have left for FA. Weasyl and Mousepads. The main backbone of the site left. Look at Mousepads, the site is everything Sofurry/Yiffstar used to be and they are growing while Sofurry dies a little more each month as even the failed UI clean up failed to win people back. Pretty much putting lipstick on a pig.
Toumal and Terra are saying the site is thriving but in truth this is like the last hours of Titanic, the ship is sinking, the captain is still at the helm and the band are playing but the site is doomed.
Over 6 months the new site has been online for and all that has happened is people have left. Any sane person would admit the redesign failed rather than lie and pretend all is well.
The only reason the site is still online is because Toumal pays the whole running costs out of his own pocket while sites like FA and IB either earn enough to pay for upkeep or cover most of the bills.
What makes a site "living" or "dying" is not as easy to measure as tools that measure site traffic are usually behind high pay walls marketed toward marketmakers these days. As a writer I can sympathize with the frustrations toward the new site that has made the visual arts more front and center. Though many of these statements being made are based on emotion, which can't really be measured toward accuracy.
You mention Weasyl. But the site hasn't had an *official site announcement* on their main page since 2021, meanwhile FurAffinity has ground to have so many they had to introduce a new type of Notification of "A" for announcement next to the ones that notify you of new submissions so that if they need to announce things in quick succession it doesn't get lost from the latest news banner on the main site.
You also mention Mousepad which is the first I'm hearing of it. And it will probably be the last given it's a horrible name. I can't even find it via Google because I just get... you know... mousepads. The item that computer people use to move their mice around on the desk surface. Adding furry doesn't help because then you get mousepads with furry characters on them.
Do I think FurAffinity took some share? Sure. Especially since FA had added some improvement for writers during SoFurry's down time. Has SoFurry lost some entries? Interestingly enough because of some of the items they had added I can say that the answer is "Yes". Entries on a per month basis are down from 6,000 to 3,500 which is easily gathered because of their search tools. Weasyl and FurAffinity don't have such options to break down new entries by date. So to acquire an actual metric here to compare apples to apples and to understand growth vs decline on all sites equally would require some creativity as they all have some information and options for search forward facing and others don't. That's a thought I'll have to chew on for now.
If what you say is true about Tourmal bankrolling to sustain it, it's not going to be sustainable, especially past Tourmal's passing unless he does have some kind of successor plan in place. While that can be a concern it also was one with FurAffinity and it seems that, in my opinion, the successor is currently running the site better than the one who passed it on. Some of what may have kept SoFurry and other non-FA sites going and growing was the controversies, deserved or not, of the prior leadership. Now that kind of 'spite' membership is coming back around and it sounds now people such as yourselves are looking for things because of your frustration with that SoFurry's leadership instead.
But as with all things, a vocal person doesn't mean that it's a feeling or reality shared by "everyone".
You can agree or disagree with what I said but the numbers are down and that's a fact. The UI is worse, both in function and appearance. Again a fact and statement shared by many. Gutting the site of much needed features is again a fact.
Toumal was told years ago when he first proposed a replacement for Sofurry 2.0 and showed screenshots or mock ups of what was called SF 3.0 later and people didn't like it. He had a fit over it because people, myself being one of them warned him the last time he ignored users with SF 1.0 it ended badly and forced a brand new site to be scrapped after only 2 years of service.
I should remind you Sofurry isn't the first site, that honour belongs to Yiffstar which was replaced with Sofurry in late 2009. Toumal was told when the new site went live that people weren't happy and he ignored it saying they will get used to it. Never happened as only six months after launch work started on a new site to replace current site. So to clear things up Sofurry now considered a failure was dubbed Sofurry 1.0 and work started on Sofurry 2.0, that is the site you knew that was only retired in 2025.
18 months it took to make a replacement for 1.0 only this time Toumal asked people what they wanted and clued people in as the new site was made.
Toumal in his arrogance will never admit 1.0 was a dud and it was his fault for designing a site to his own tastes rather than listening to others.
It doesn't sound like much today but Sofurry became a war zone, people that supported Toumal vs those who hated what he did turned on each other and Toumal became the target for pretty vile comments, I remember one I read being "Eat shit and die!"
He got death threats and warned to never come to their local cons.
A number of people left, now Toumal even today 16 years later won't admit this and points out numbers climbed, this was due to people wanting to see the drama or join in. If the site was a winner as he claims then why was it scrapped after only 2 years?
This set the tone, Toumal being the kind of man who can't admit he made a mistake and wronged so many. But he did promise he would never design a site behind closed doors without user input.
This is a promise he would later break.
Back to SF 3.0, the site wasn't liked and he was told this, myself being one such person, now he sulked at the time and put 3.0 on the back burner. He wasn't going to give up. Years later he changed the name, the color and a few other small details and called it Sofurry next. Basically just a rebadged 3.0 with a few small changes.
People didn't like the mock ups, he ignored them and even blocked people who said things he didn't like. He moved ahead in closed beta with Next and then later to open beta. Next ran along side 2.0 for over a year and people still didn't like it. Only a handful of people used it for more than 15 minuities at a time and the same flaws were still there. 2.0 was still the better and go to site.
A smart man would've looked back to 2010 and thought do I want that again? He didn't and pressed on with Next despite people objecting.
Last year in a pretty convenient turn of events the servers that house 2.0 was bumping their prices up, golden opportunity to take away the site everyone loved and force Next on people which in a full year they hadn't even attempted to fix.
Rather than pay to keep SF 2.0 online like a sane person he used it to scrap the site and then as many people believed stalled for 6 months before bringing sofurry next online, exploiting people's desperately.
This kind of worked, SF next now dubbed SFX hit a one time high of 3000 users, a feat it hasn't managed since.
Pretty much forcing his view of what a site should be, this is what happened in 2010 only this time he was more sneaky and had the people who host he servers to blame.
Now SFX has been online for 6 months, in that time it's numbers have dropped, content in both quality and volume have dropped. They no longer publicly post stats, and have moved all comments, critique and outrage behind a private wall, blaming sites like Discord for being impossible to use.
Now this is backed up by Toumal and his staff banning people from SFX who say anything bad about the site, even Neer never did that. They go one step further than third party sites like Blusky, Reddit and Twitter by removing comments on the SF feed and posts that show them is a less than positive way.
Again even Neer one of the most power mad dictators in the fandom never did that.
Today SFX's numbers are still down, lower than SF 2.0 ever was and the staff make excuses as even Google AI confirms this.
Yes SF has nearly always been funded by Toumal, the way he runs the site means few people put money in, his leadership, poor staff, trolling and he redesigning the site every time he gets bored. Look at Terra, I think he put money in but only because Toumal made him second in charge and the same goes for the other staff.
These staff have all tried to get positions of power on other sites only to be rejected, an ex member of staff told me this. How bad must you be for FA even when offering money have told you to jog on rather than put you on the staff and they used to take anyone.
SFX will never be finished, only two coders know the framework of the site and they aren't even fully skilled. Even if they could fix it they still have a bad design, still refuse to admit they are wrong, still only have 2 skileld coders doing the job of 30, still have the trolling, still have the bad staff and still have a man child like Toumal holding the keys to the site.
Worse SF has reached it's tipping point. Only selling the site would save it, just like new ownership helped FA.
Sorry for being this long and a bit of rant but you need to know the fully history not the censored stuff Toumal and nis minions tell you.

I've heard a lot about Mousepad. It seems to mostly be selling itself as pro-cub and anti-AI. I have no idea whether the site will be any good but, from what I've seen, they have behaved like jerks.

It is and unlike IB human is allowed on Mousepad. Toumal and co did act like jerks punishing people who didn't like SFX and not keeping the site free of trolls. Right now he's put himself in a echo chamber by removing or ignoring all negative feedback and seems to think SFX is the best site online. Sadly only he, his staff and a few loyalists believe this. SFX has more bots than people using the site which is why they haven't posted any more stats in nearly 6 months. SFX has lost a lot of it's audience.
To me this smacks of the Titanic, Toumal was warned long before he smashed into the iceberg and ignored every warning. The ship is now sinking, Toumal is still at the helm pretending all is well and the band is playing as the water level gets closer after minute. No will admit they screwed up. SFX gets less than a third of the traffic 2.0 got.
The site has become a cesspit due to owner Toumal and vice owner Terra, both having ignored years of public feedback and doing what they want while the site fails. Both will lie to your face and say all is well and fiddle the results.
You have staff members like Godracos who are worse than the trolls and less than useless. His answer to people that don't like the site is to troll them getting the last work then banning people. He's ran his fat mouth on the sofurry reddit post and then banning people or removing comments so he always gets the last word. Just like the others he thinks he is always right and everyone else is wrong. Pretty drunk on the little bit of power he has.
There's not one decent staff member on the SF list. Even as furs go some are into some pretty nasty stuff. I wouldn't be shocked if they were on some watchlists. The site had decent staff that Toumal drove away by being a diva yet he always blames others for chasing the staff away.

Colliefan here, long term user of SF. I was there when Yiffstar was decommissioned. I've been using Sofurry and its predecessor for 17 years, 18 if you count the year I spent as a guest before I joined.
Reading some of these comments I can say this happened as I'm an eye witness. A few of my friends told me about this.
Warning this is long, this covers 16 years worth of Toumal and his staff's abuse.
Basically just before Christmas 2009 when the site was in most demand Toumal pulled the plug, now this wasn't out of the blue as they had made a news announcement a couple of months before that was plastered on the top of Yiffstar.
I'll be honest I thought the timing was piss poor as most people are off work and you can't enjoy the outdoors as its too cold.
Still I followed, despite the fanfare over Sofurry there was no screenshots, no details given other than it is going to be better than the old site and one staff member told me this make the aging Yiffstar able to take on furaffinity for the first time in many years. it could've been Toumal who told me that but it was a staff member.
I remember how proud they were yet there was something strange about it. No user feedback, no open beta, no sneak peeks or any info other than it will be better. No longer a story site with art added on later, no longer would there be two sites, Anthrostar for clean and Yiffstar for adult, it would all be under one roof.
Not knowing Toumal as well as I do today I trusted him.
Sofurry fell behind, they weren't going to be ready in time, I think it took an extra day. Not a big deal right? Then the new site flicked into life, or more like coughed like a 100 a day smoker. Nothing worked, the site lagged badly, your curser didn't work when you clicked a button, the site a bright mess of colour that looked like a child had designed it. It was hard to navigate, it was less enjoyable to use. Worse was when you pointed out a problem the staff would disagree and say it is working fine. Turns out the new Sofurry site which would be named Sofurry 1.0 later only worked on firefox. You used anything else and option boxes like edit wouldn't show up. The site would lag twice as much and freeze up.
I was forced to screenshot it with an arrow pointing to where it should be before they believed me.
I along with others told Toumal the new site isn't what people wanted.
Those of us that waited felt like a kid a Christmas with nothing under the tree. I said this was a mistake, no Toumal said to me and others people will get used to it. I said you don't hear the hostility people have towards you. Wishing you dropped dead isn't a case of people getting used to something new. Toumal hadn't gotten my skin by this point so I was a little more patient with him. I said look you can't take a site people love, redesign it from the ground up making it unrecognisable from the site they loved and expect them to be happy. You can't do this without user feedback and force you views of what a site should be on them.
I got a whole month's worth of excuses why he did what he did.
The site became a battle zone, people that loved the new site attacked the ones that didn't like it and the ones who didn't like it attacked those who did. I got in the crosshairs of one of Toumal's friends by agreeing with a person who I followed who said Sofurry was a mistake and people should leave until Toumal gets his shit together. This person was a nice little troll who went by the name BlackWingDragon, a real nasty piece of work. He was banned for life from FA and every other site, his friendship with Toumal was the only thing that saved him as even many of the staff hated his guts but didn't have the balls to tell Toumal. BWD was one of the most active people trolling those who didn't like Sofurry 1.0. I reported him, I got told just block him, didn't stop him, he would leave more nasty comments under yours because he could no longer reply. This is 2010. BWD made one of the most nasty comments I have ever seen, he said to person he knew was from the US and had family in NYC that the US deserved 9/11 and not enough people died.
I was so outraged at that comment I reported and PM'ed Toumal, Toumal did reply which shocked me but he said I won't punish him and keep all complaints to the report system, anyone responding to BWD will risk a ban.
I was so angry at Toumal. A while later BWD thought he was untouchable on Sofurry, now Sofurry 2.0 I think. He was attacking others and a journal was formed aimed at BWD, every reply was a person who had a run in, I shared my run and other things I saw him do as well as Toumal's response. This started a petition to get BWD banned from SF. Boy was Toumal pissed at that, he locked the comments on that journal after saying this isn't allowed on SF. The outrage was so bad Toumal was forced to suspend BWD for a month, Toumal was pissed with me because I let it slip how he covered up for BWD.
I got a ban threat for that, my first one I think. Toumal held that against me and I held how he ran the site and covered for his friends against him. Things went from bad to worse. I had the first of two trolls, I won't name drop the first but this person attacked my friends and stalked me and my friends to every site we used, would start drama then cry to admin. This person made a threat they were going to drive us off the net one site at a time. DA, said just block them, FA gave warnings, but they point they followed me and two of my friends to SF, this led to years of trolling, I would get suspended for making a nasty comment, they would get suspended when they were a little slow removing a call out journal or some vent art aimed at us. Toumal was less than useful, probably due to bad things I said about BWD, SF and him, plus he never forgave me for making him suspend his friend.
FA wasn't as keen on banning trolls in those days, more so if they had a lot of followers or followers who were friends with admin. In the end the troll made a bad mistake and vent art along with screenshots was used and this person got a full year's ban from FA. As I said FA wasn't as keen on ending trolling in those days. This troll's friends blamed us so one by one they got banned, took another year to do this. While this was happening SF refused to ban the ringleader, the the two other trolls went too far and got a ban, the ringleader fearing a ban left SF and used the site to stalk instead. The ringleader tried the same stunt on Inkbunny and was banned for it, IB was keen on not allowing hate on the site in those days.
At some point SF 1.0 was scrapped, 2.0 was the new site, built in full view, built with user feedback, some of my own made it into the site. Both new and old site ran side by side. People loved the new site. about a year had passed by this point.
A couple of years after another troll and me crossed paths, this person was an artist hired by a then friend. My friend asked me for feedback on the project. The artist had a very thin skin and a temper, you can see where this is going. The artist did slapdash work, really butchered my friend's project and I would say things like "Not bad, I can only give it 3 stars due to key details being changed from the script. That earned me the wrath of this artist and everything friend they had, this artist called me some of the most nasty names before telling me to butt out, now my friend failed to put this artist in line. Yet my friend still asked me for feedback but said unless I was giving a full 5 stars not to vote.
Strange but I honoured it. I mentioned in a comment on another chapter from the project that this was meant to be that, no big deal. The artist laid into me a second time, then said I have a day job and I don't have the time to read the script, I just skim it. I said maybe I can help you and write notes? The artist exploded, called me everything from a pig to a dog and back again, posted nasty comments, then I answered if you can't do the job right hand it to someone else, this opened the floodgates, my friend turned on me, the artist cried those fake tears and then took to blocking me so I couldn't reply but left nasty comments on every comment I left.
It got bad so I reported said artist and was told to block them despite them breaking a number of SF rules, oh boy big mistake, the trolling got bad, the artist stole my work, posted hate art of my sona and call out journals. SF did nothing until I fired back. I got suspended which made the problem worse. I then in my anger posted a call out on IB aimed at SF and the staff, this angered Toumal to the point I got another threat.
The artist was never punished on SF and every year for 13 years I would ask the hate be removed and the staff would refuse just to be petty. Every other site removed it.
I had a member of staff be very rude towards me, left a nasty comment on journal of mine then blocked me, I thought fine, I'm not getting into a fight with a staff member even one who is clearly a troll, I made a report about his conduct saying Mods can be acting this way. I never got a reply so I blocked said Mod. A while later I got a PM from Toumal warning me that said Mod was about pull me up on something I had done, but couldn't message me due to the block and that the next time I blocked a staff member I would face a ban. I said to Toumal you hire trolls you can't be shocked when people block them, if you did your job right then SF wouldn't be a joke.
By this point things had soured between me and Toumal, he refused to listen so I got more and more short with him, not my proudest moment.
Some point later Toumal started work on SF 3.0 and there was mock ups on an account used just for the new site, Toumal had told me to put my money where my mouth is as anyone can be wise after the event. I pointed out every flaw with the mock up site, I was ignored, later blocked from that account. Toumal said I was attacking the site. Yet others had said the same thing as me and they weren't blocked, by this point the mock ups of SF 3.0 weren't liked wasn't a big enough man to admit he had posted the ideas for the site but still failed to vary the groups working on the design, 3.0 was a dead in the water, staff resigned, Toumal blamed me for burning them out. How when I couldn't comment on it and didn't even know which staff worked on it?
Toumal wouldn't accept his vision for SF was not what everyone else wanted. He scrapped SF 3.0 in name only, the same site with a few design tweaks would make a comeback under a new name later, Sofurry Next. People pretty much didn't like it as it was 3.0 with a coat of paint and some some changes. I made a journal saying changing the name doesn't fix the site. Maybe do something about the trolling on the site and the piss poor staff.
That didn't go down well. Sofurry Next was DOA, but Toumal pushed the idea despite people not liking it, the old much loved Sofurry 2.0 was at the end of its service life, despite IB and FA being older and working just fine.
When the mock ups turned to screenshots then to open beta running alongside 2.0 people didn't like the new site, missing key features, journals, shouts, stars, chat, a clean layout. I mentioned this and was suspended for it, hating on SF was now a crime.
Now they had only suspended me from the old 2.0 site, I could still get in on Sofurry Next now called Sofurry X, even with that being my only choice I still couldn't get on with the garbage that was Sofurry X so took the suspension and used IB and FA as well furiffic. A month later it was up and I was more pissed at Toumal, he took to suspending people that didn't share his vision. I wasn't the only one who got that treatment.
I told him for over year Sofurry X would never be as liked as Sofurry 2.0, he was wasting his time as few people used the beta for long.
Now we're in 2025, mid 2025 and Toumal has a nasty trick waiting, he's going to claim costs mean SF 2.0 will be shut down in the upcoming month. They are now putting all their effort into SFX. For 6 months, we heard soon, or another month, breakdowns were blamed, truth is they were using this time to clean up SFX, that's why it took so long. Fast forward to 2026, SFX is now online, the site is broken, slow, hard to navigate, not hard like SF 1.0 was, this is hard like trying to defuse a bomb while wearing boxing gloves hard.
I pointed out this was a bad call, SFX wasn't ready, will still as flawed as day one, it was missing all the key features, it was buggy and the stories looked like crap.
Now I could've been more polite, that is on me, but you can only be ignored so much or blamed so much or take so much abuse before you give it back.
Toumal started doing a Neer, banning people that displeased him, saying anything bad about SF would earn you a ban, they would censor all bad comments and turned the site into one of the worst sites in both design and experience.
Because of this loads of people have left and SFX has dropped to behind DA, it has become the worst furry site on the net. If you google AI they will tell you the site has lost 70% of its users, visitors which used to be 7K to 10K day on SF 2.0 dropped to 3K on their first day with SFX and dropped to 1800 recently, they might claim it is higher counting bots, but the true traffic is low which is why they no longer post stats and why they are trying to fix SFX which the site is dead.
Toumal and Terra and giving CPR to a dead body while telling everyone it is only a flesh wound.
Like others have mentioned https://mousepad.art is a site built on the old YS principals, clean design, good staff, friendly place with a good story reader.
And unlike SFX, no trolling, they have journals, shouts, more features, stories don't look like hot garbage, the search works and it has a clean look with a decent UI that makes using the site nice.
Plus where SFX is losing people this site is growing.
Sorry for being so long but if you give Toumal an inch he will turn it around and blame someone else, I needed to show every injustice going back to 2009 he and his staff have done.
Point out this isn't the first or even second time he's done such things. As others have said he's a diva. He burns his own staff out wanting blood from a stone and blames others when they come up short.
All facts Toumal would deny or have excuses for. Seems Toumal's MO is to do things without thinking while ignoring every warning then crying about the consequences and blaming everyone else. Any decent leader would've seen the furs of SF didn't like SFX and would kept 2.0 alive even at greater cost until the new replacement would be ready. He can't even claim he couldn't afford it as he found the money to buy new servers for SFX 6 months later. He has driven off, banned or censored all who aren't stoking his ego. As you said the man's a diva. As it stands now most of they're daily hits come from bots.
