FurNation to close down after 14 years online

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

The Luxor pyramid on FurNation Prime, the only FurNation sim to be closed down along with the website.

FurNation, the furry web hosting and general community website, as well as the host of 14 Second Life regions, will close permanently on May 16, 2009.

In a statement posted to the front page of the FurNation website, owner and administrator Nexxus blamed the closure on a lack of funding and a debt of over $2,000 of hosting fees going back several years.

Email accounts hosted on FurNation will continue to operate, however, hosted websites will disappear on May 16 and will run on FTP only until the end of the month. All FurNation branded regions in Second Life – with the exception of FurNation Prime – are to remain open.

Two furry webcomics have recently published new "Dead tree" compilations of their strips.

Thomas K. Dye has published the first book of strips from Newshounds II entitled "MegaNewsWest" and contains strips dating since when the original series ended with the staff of KPET News having moved to a now larger news company. The book is published by Lulu and costs £10.64, or you can download the book for £5.70.

The other book is the second part of Bill Holbrook's Kevin & Kell treasury, featuring several of his older strips. Following on from his first part of the treasury, "Historic Kevin and Kell", the new book, "The Great Bird Conspiracy" includes strips from previous editions as well as containing a series of never-before-seen extras. Amongst the extras include a teleplay for a proposed 1997 Kevin & Kell television show. The book is published by Moonbase Press and is available from The Bill Holbrook Store at a price of $24.95 (about £16.50).

Holbrook is also preparing to publish his 14th annual collection of strips for July, entitled "Rules of Engagement".

Pre-ordering FIRST BOOK OF LAPISM: Correcting an error

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Quentin 'Cubist ' Long here. Last week, I announced a special pre-order deal for THE FIRST BOOK OF LAPISM, by Phil Geusz... and I made a mistake. When I calculated the postage for this deal, I was counting the number of *pages* in the book... but what matters for postage is mass, and that means counting the number of *sheets of paper* in the book.
In other words, I overestimated how much it would cost to ship the thing to most places on the planet (US pre-orders will be shipped via Media Mail, hence aren't affected by my error).
Fortunately, this means I can cut the cost on FIRST BOOK OF LAPISM pre-orders... and that's what this here message is about!

FurNation comes back online under group ownership

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Troubled furry portal FurNation has come back online, following a campaign to save it from huge operating debts.

A statement was sent yesterday to FurNation members stating:

We have worked out an agreement that will allow FN to stay online. The service is being transfered to the Furry Community as a whole, and will be run and operated as a group effort with voting for the CEO and board of directors like any convention or small public business would be run. Basically, this will be the first web service to be fully owned and operated by the fandom! We will have more details this week as we work out all the plans and create the TOS and Charter for the new FurNation! Please stay tuned.

However, gallery sections of the website remain offline for the time being. Hosting services are due to change soon.

Penn. 'daddyfur' charged with teen contact

40-year-old Pennsylvanian Alan David Berlin — known as Alan T. Panda, Furrypanda and Alan Panda Bear — was charged this Thursday with unlawful contact with a minor (related to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse[1]); a first-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.[2] He has also been accused of five related second-degree and third-degree felonies. He is being held in Dauphin County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Alan, who lives in Carlisle, PA, allegedly chatted with the 15-year-old over the past two months, with discussions including the proposal that he travel to the boy's home in Harrisburg and that they have sex in the back yard while his parents slept. The complaint also mentioned requests for nude photos and suggestions of a meeting between the boy and another adult, with offers of a hotel room if Berlin could take pictures of them having sex.
