Sacred Hoan Kiem turtle captured for medical treatment
Many concerned Vietnamese are focussed on the lake in the capital city, Hanoi, where veterinarians are deciding how to treat the sacred Hoan Kiem turtle.
The original attempt to capture the turtle in March failed but, on the 3rd of April, 50 rescuers worked for 2 hours and successfully captured the turtle. It's believed that the turtle was injured and made sick by the pollution in the lake. The turtle, which weighs 200 kilograms and may be 100 years old, is one of only four known members of its species.
According to legend, Lê L?i gained independence for Vietnam from China with a magical sword given to him by the golden turtle god, Kim Qui. After his victory, Lê L?i was boating on a lake in Hanoi when a giant turtle came to the surface, took the sword and disappeared under the water. The lake was named H? Hoàn Ki?m, meaning "the lake of the returned sword."
