RMFC seeks $30,000 to survive

Rocky Mountain Fur Con

Rocky Mountain Fur Con, based in Denver, Colorado, is facing tough times. Despite 35% growth, debt has led 2009 chairman Sorin Kat to plea for $30,000 to keep the event alive.[1]

The convention's organizers are actively soliciting large donations, offering lifetime memberships and board seats in exchange for funds. Over $4,000 has been raised so far.

RMFC's problems stem from a charge for not filling its room block: a set of hotel rooms reserved for attendees at a significantly-reduced rate. Sorin — who is also treasurer for RMFC's managing organization — says the event was "operating at a surplus if not for this one debt … [which] was based solely on our estimation of room rentals".[2]

Despite the debt, organizers still hope to find space this year at a smaller, more affordable location over August 7-9. Failing that, the convention may be postponed to 2010.[2]

Stand-up comedian Mark Allen will perform his Pet Project show for what appears to be his last time on 11th May.

Mark Allen's Pet Project is a stand-up show which Allen performed at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe festival, which covered the relationship between people and animals. It also involved Allen "Infiltrating" the world of the furry fandom via the use of a Dalmatian fursuit.

On his website, Allen wrote on 1st March: "It's been confirmed that I'll be performing Mark Allen's Pet Project at the Brighton Fringe on Monday 11th May 2009. It'll be at the new Fletch @ St Andrews venue and will probably be the last time I perform the show before I start working on my next bit of nonsense. If you want to see it before it's retired, you can book tickets on the Brighton Fringe website after Thursday 19th March."

Outside of the show, Allen also wrote part of a sex-based article for TimeOut magazine in which he covered fursuit sex in 2008. However, he noted this was a minority in the fandom.

Comedy Review: Mark Allen's Pet Project

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

As previously reported, Mark Allen's stand-up show concerning the human relationship of animals (including furries) is to end in a gig in May.

Luckily for me, I have had some correspondence with Mark after I spread the news of the show on The Furtean Times and other websites. He then mentioned that as far as he was aware, no furry has seen the show. Therefore, he gave me a copy of the show he recorded in London last October for me to review, from a furry perspective. So, here it is.

~ RCFM is OFFICIALLY a 501(c)7 Non-Profit Fraternal Organization now! ~

Hey Y'all,

We are Officially Official now!

It's taken a couple of years to complete, but RCFM is now a 501(c)7 classified Non-profit organization. It's something we've always wanted to do, though we orginally toyed with the idea of filing as a 501(c)3, which is a Charitable Organization.

The final round of voting started yesterday and will continue until 19th April. The awards will be presented at All Fur Fun in Spokane, Washington in May. (Talking about that, how come all of these awards have been presented in the North America? We British have got conventions? Can’t we make it ConFuzzled for next year?)

Girls mag finds a place for furries

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Page two of the Sugar article

Pages three and four

It would appear that the furry fandom is the "in thing" this season, as typical teenage girls mag Sugar gives us a whole four pages of coverage. The shocking bit? It's actually... good!

I'll keep this short (it's probably best for the article to speak for itself), but it's actually a well composed piece of literature. Sure there's the odd factual error (WikiFur is not part of the Wikimedia Foundation), but the whole thing is really quite honest, based almost entirely off interviews with real furries.

The best part? The word "sex" isn't mentioned in the entire article. Who'da thought we'd see the day?
