Yiff Image Board closes

The pool "is closed" -- Splash

The Yiff Image Board (fap.yiff.com) has closed due to a lack of funding. The site's administrator, Splash, left a notice:[1]

" Fapyiff is closed. No we didn't get lawsuited, I'm just tired of paying the bill. Go to fchan. "

The image board was commonly known as "Yiff FAP", and was sometimes confused with Yiffstar's F.A.P. The site has been around since at least November 2005. It closed in October 2006 due to server maintenance, but subsequently reopened.

The board is not the first to close, or to re-open. The site currently known as Lulz.net has been down twice for extended periods, while the short-lived ChanPlz was closed by its administrators after controversy over its rejection of Do Not Post lists.[2]

Anthrocon selects Animal Friends as 2007 charity

Animal Friends

Anthrocon has selected local no-kill animal shelter Animal Friends as its 2007 charity.[1]

The shelter will benefit from the proceeds of Anthrocon's annual charity auction, which raised $5,845 for the Western Pennsylvania National Wild Animal Orphanage last year (the charity's total revenue was $8,400).[2] Representatives of the charity will also be available as in the dealers room.

Animal Friends, founded in 1943, places over 2,500 dogs, cats, and rabbits into homes each year. It is located on Camp Horne Road, ten minutes outside of downtown Pittsburgh.[3]

Conifur Northwest cancelled for good; assets given to All Fur Fun

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

All Fur Fun registration director KieferSkunk has stated what many suspected - that long-running furry convention Conifur Northwest has been permanently cancelled due to a lack of further interest from lead organizers Flinthoof and Tibo. According to KieferSkunk,

" All Fur Fun received a generous donation from Conifur staff - basically all of their art-show panels, their registration desk, tons of supplies, a bunch of old equipment ... In the process, we got word from Canaan and Tibo that Conifur has been cancelled for good - they're tired of running it.[1] "

Flinthoof and Tibo have been named as sponsors of All Fur Fun in return for their donation, along with a few as-yet unnamed Conifur staff.[1][2]

Museum of Sex exhibits modified plush toys

Meeko, a popular plush toy, now on display

New York City, USA – The Museum of Sex, which first opened in October 2002, has covered many controversial topics - from Chinese erotica and male objectification to pin-up photography and sex workers. Now they are extending their coverage to the erotic side of the furry fandom with a new exhibition: Kink: Geography of the Erotic Imagination.

Opening February 7, the show was patterned after the 2000 book Deviant Desires,[1] and features costumes, props, photographs, videos, recreated environments and original artwork from the leather, bondage and shoe fetish communities, as well as "more exotic destinations" such as ponyplay, adult babies, macrophilia, sploshing, medical play, mudlarking, body expansion - and lastly, furries.[2]

The exhibit's curator (and book author) Katharine Gates gained notoriety within the fandom for her book, as well as an interview in the Vanity Fair article Pleasures of the Fur.[3] This, along with coverage like Sex2K's Plushies and Furries, led to a tightening of media policies that remains to this day, particularly at Midwest FurFest.

Rapid T. Rabbit and Friends celebrates 24th anniversary

Rapid T. Rabbit

Furry fandom's longest running puppeteering show is celebrating its 24th anniversary this Wednesday, and the show's host is hoping for a big turnout. Rapid T. Rabbit and Friends has been running since President's Day 1983.[1] Featuring live pawpet action along with prerecorded coverage of local and regional events, the show's history spans 572 regular 30-minute episodes, as well as almost 100 specials.[2]

Rapid T. Rabbit himself has participated in several furry conventions in the past, the first being ConFurence East 1995. Of late, though, increased transportation and studio costs and the move of Anthrocon to Pittsburgh in 2006 have forced the wandering lapine to stick closer to home. He does plan to attend United!, scheduled to be held this August in Newark, New Jersey.

Rapid T. Rabbit has had many guests in the past, from T.H.E. Fox to Dr. Demento, Tenderheart Bear, Chuck E. Cheese and even Big Bird himself.[4] The show reached a high point in September 1999 with an interview on The Daily Show.[5]. Since then, ever-rising housing rates have led to restricted time for filming, which often has to take place in co-host Cuppy's mixing room.[1]

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2007 reports 37% growth

Furry Weekend Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia, USA - The Sheraton Gateway Hotel was booked solid this weekend, as hundreds of fans descended upon Atlanta for a weekend of fur, fun . . . and, in one case, diving down the stairs.[2]

Furry Weekend Atlanta reported near-record growth this year, with paid attendance jumping 37% from 557 to 762, making it the 4th largest furry convention.[3] On numerical terms, this growth almost equals that of two years ago, when the number of con-goers nearly doubled from 270 to 500.

Ursa Major Awards

The Ursa Major Awards, furry fandom's closest equivalent to the Hugos, are entering their final week of nominations. All members of the fandom may participate by suggesting their favourite works. Voting starts on March 10.

The objective of the Awards is to find the year's best anthropomorphic material and promote it to the fandom. Nominations are taken in several categories: comic book, comic strip, published illustration, motion picture, dramatic series, novel, short fiction piece, fanzine, and other literary works. Winners typically receive a certificate, although an engraved plaque was awarded in 2002.

The 2005 awards were presented at Rocket City FurMeet last May. Winners included The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, There She Is!! Step 2, Volle, "In His Own Country", Tales of the Questor, Usagi Yojimbo, Faux Pas, South Fur Lands and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, as well as an illustration by Stephanie Stone. [1]
