Sometimes, the publisher explains things perfectly well for us. Like this: “In this atmospheric tribute to the medieval folklore tradition of trickster tales starring Reynard the fox, beloved children’s cartoonist Ben Hatke turns his pen to a very special project for adult readers. Inspired by the 12th century tales of the indomitable trickster fox Reynard, this offbeat tribute to the archetypal rogue has a satisfyingly old-fashioned feeling to it. Although this Reynard adventure is entirely the creation of modern fairytale master Ben Hatke (Mighty Jack), it fits seamlessly into the body of Reynard tales still beloved in Europe to this day. Featuring evocative, charming black-and-white illustrations and a swiftly moving narrative, Reynard’s Tale follows our hero through a series of encounters with other classic figures from this body of folklore to piece together a headlong journey through a perilous landscape filled with murderers, kings, ex-lovers, mermaids, and even Death herself.” So there you have it. And it’s available now.
Dog who rescued family may be euthanized
Posted by mwalimu on Thu 9 Aug 2001 - 08:14Boomer, a 17-year-old German Shepherd who woke his Florida family when their trailer was on fire in June, may have to be euthanized. The home was left uninhabitable and the family is staying with friends who couldn't take in their two dogs, so they were forced to place them at the local Humane Society, where they will be put down if they are not adopted within a few days (unusual for dogs that age).
Read the CNN article for more details.
Update: (2001/08/10) Since the story became national news, calls have been pouring into the Humane Society shelter from people all over the country interested in adopting the dogs, jamming phone lines. The dogs are no longer in danger of being eunthanized and the shelter hopes to place them with someone local (and, one would hope, willing to return them to their original owners when circumstances permit) by this weekend. Story here.
Update: (2001/08/11) The dogs were adopted by a 74-year-old woman from nearby Port St. Lucie.

New Alan Dean Foster
Posted by Fred on Fri 3 Aug 2001 - 21:07The following news is snipped from Alan Dean Foster's home page :
"Many of you have written to ask if I'm ever going to write another Spellsinger novel. Among other things, that's up to the publisher. In the interim, I've done an 11,000 word Spellsinger novelette that's set immediately after TIME OF THE TRANSFERENCE, and returns (as you requested) to the days before Jon-Tom & Mudge became, well, domesticated. The story is titled SERENADE and will appear in a collection of original stories from famous fantasy series that is being edited by Brian Thomsen and William Fawcett. The publisher is Baen books. I won't reveal any details here, save to say that one scene deals with multiple requests I've received over the years from many of you who are particularly into what is jocularly called "furry" fandom. Mudge is the center piece (as it were) of this particular solicitation."
MASTERS OF FANTASY, edited by Brian Thomsen & William Fawcett, is announced as a Baen Books release sometime during 2002.
ConFurence Group creates new annual awards
Posted by Fred on Fri 3 Aug 2001 - 21:05Along with the ConFurence's name-change from ConFurence 13 to ConFurence 2002, last year's special Awards for Best Anthropomorphic Motion Pictures and TV Series of the 20th Century are transforming into a new series of annual Awards: the Anthropomorphic Literature & Arts of the Year Awards. (We debated giving them a cute nickname similar to the Oscars, Emmys or Hugos, but it was felt that such a nickname should arise from popular use among the fans rather than being imposed by the administrators.)
'Tiger man' wants fur graft
Posted by Anon on Fri 3 Aug 2001 - 21:02Full article here, including picture.
Dennis Smith is tattooed from head to toe with orange and black stripes and his teeth have been filed to needle point.
He has also had latex whiskers implanted and surgery to his lips so he has a permanent snarl. He now wants a surgeon to graft tiger fur on to his skin, like a perma-wig.
Mr Smith, who has changed his name by deed poll to Cat Man, said: "I have a collection of old tiger pelts from the days of hunting. I want these grafted on to me. It will cost another $100,000 but will be worth it.
"When I have the coat of a tiger, I feel I will have reached my goal in life."
