Turns out yesterday’s entry wasn’t the only peacock-centric illustrated book we found at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. Peacocks are known for their beautiful feathers, not for their beautiful voices — but what if there was a peacock who actually could sing? What would their fellows think about it? That’s the premise of The Unique Beak, written by singer/songwriter Estani Frizzell and illustrated in watercolor by Sophia Frizzell. “Sai is a kind young peacock who lives with his royal family. He has brilliant blue tail feathers that any regal peacock would be proud of — and Sai loves to sing! But his family laughs at that idea, and at him! They say his beak is too big while making fun of his singing voice. Saddened by their ridicule, Sai finally vows never to sing in front of anyone again! He hides himself away and doubts his dreams. Will he take their criticism to heart? Will he give up? Estani Frizzell’s spirited and unique story shows children how just one special friend’s support can make a difference in carrying us where our talents are meant to take us.” Available now from Greenleaf Book Group.
Wolves Targeted For Aerial Hunting In Alaska
Posted by Trickster on Tue 9 Nov 2004 - 07:50Unlike wolves in the continental US, Alaska wolves are not protected by the Endangered Species Act. Some people hunt Alaska wolves solely to increase the number of prey species that can also be hunted, which helps tourism.
Alaska as a whole has voted twice to ban the mass-killing of wolves via aerial shooting, where hunters divebomb packs of wolves, chase them until they tire, and shoot them from the air. But last June the governor of Alaska signed a bill to allow it anyway. The practice is about to be expanded to cover a larger area, and may soon include bears as well.
You may visit this link to learn more about the degree to which politicians and hunters are playing god with the ecosystem of Alaska, and what can be done about it.

My buddy Puck notes that it wasn't even a Roman zoo. MSNBC has the full story, including photo.
Dog saves woman's life by calling 911
Posted by bluehorizon on Thu 4 Nov 2004 - 23:02Leana Beasley has faith that a dog is man's best friend.
Faith, a 4-year-old Rottweiler, phoned 911 when Beasley fell out of her wheelchair and barked urgently into the receiver until a dispatcher sent help. Then the service dog unlocked the front door for the police officer.
"I sensed there was a problem on the other end of the 911 call," said dispatcher Jenny Buchanan. "The dog was too persistent in barking directly into the phone receiver. I knew she was trying to tell me something."

Wolves in Narnia
Posted by bluehorizon on Sun 24 Oct 2004 - 21:27The howling of wolves might be something residents of Tuakau, south of Auckland, will have to get used to.
Ten wolves have been brought in from Los Angeles for filming on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The pack, which includes seven males and three females, is being housed at Mark Vette's Animal Rescue.
Two siblings, Ricky and Bob, will play the key characters Maugrim and Vardan.
Production of the film will move south from November 1, when Queenstown, Oamaru and Canterbury will feature.

Solicitation for Bids for Further Confusion 2006
Posted by Anon on Thu 21 Oct 2004 - 11:07Further Confusion Bid Guidelines
As is our custom, Further Confusion's chairman will be stepping down after Further Confusion 2005. This custom keeps fresh ideas and fresh approaches coming into Further Confusion, gives more folks the opportunity to give their input and dedication toward its improvement, and lets people grow into more demanding roles.
That means we will need a new chairman. Toward that end, we are posting our annual invitation for bids to be submitted to AAE if you want to chair FC2006.
Claw & Quill goes live
Posted by Chipotle on Tue 19 Oct 2004 - 08:42The new anthropomorphic sf/fantasy webzine Claw & Quill (previously reported here on Flayrah) is now online. We've opened with stories by Kris Schnee, Jefferson P. Swycaffer, and Michael H. Payne (author of The Blood Jaguar), poetry by Elizabeth Barrette, and reviews of new novels by Fred Patten. Illustrations are by Kenket, Conrad "Lynx" Wong, Cubist and Kim Liu. Ideally, Claw & Quill will be updated on a biweekly basis starting in November, and we'll continue to need both stories and artists willing to do story illustrations (and contribute frontispiece work, which we'd like to put in rotation).
