Do you suffer from Bad Astronomy?

Everyone knows that meteors heat up in the Earth's atmosphere because of friction and that the moon only looks bigger at the horizon because the thick air acts like a lens... right?
If this and other cosmic myths are your "well known facts", maybe you need BadAstronomy.com

Furnation... banned in China?!

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

For those of you who follow world-wide internet policies, China's list of banned websites continue to grow, actively filtered out by what's colorfully coming to be called 'The Great Firewall of China'.
Out of curiosity, I began testing which websites are banned.
And the first one I entered to see reported inaccessible? Furnation.
Incredulous, I ran the test again, and a few more times. 1 successful attempt to reach it, out of 20. It leads to curious speculation; is it something as simply benign as a router misconfiguration? Perhaps a few servers along the way had conked out? Maybe Slashdot having linked the testing server has resulted in a sudden drop of reliability of the testing method?
Or maybe the mainland Chinese are afraid of teh cultural revolution that some ears and tails might unleash. (He typed firmly tongue-in-cheek.)

Inu-Yasha comes to Cartoon Network

Your rating: None

Inu-yasha, Rumiko Takahashi's latest animated series will appear this Saturday, (and perhaps later Saturdays) on Cartoon Networks "Adult Swim" programming block.
This series concerns a modern Tokyo girl, a dead ancient priestess, and a half-demon who has feelings for both (or are they one). The half-demon (Inu-yasha) has some dog-like traits in roughly the manner of the reoccuring Japanese cat-girl.

At least six shows are sheduled.

But it's not furry!

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

The complaint in the title comes up now and again, when we post a story to the site that isn't directly related to furry fandom. The FAQ only touches on the answer (okay, the FAQ is over a year and a half old, and needs to be rewritten), so I thought I would talk about Flayrah's 'mission statement'. Click below for more.

Raven too smart for owner

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

Richard Cooper owns a talking raven and wishes he could make him the star of a bird of prey show. But instead of saying cute things, like 'come back soon', Zeus, who spontaniously started picking up words at 6 months, keeps telling Richard to shut up, teases the dogs and torments visitors. Not so stupid.

ConiFur and Dropping Air Fares

If you are on the bubble deciding if you can afford to go to this year's ConiFur NorthWest, now is the perfect time to check out the current competitive pricing plans that the various airlines are offering. Upon getting reports of very low rates from some of our membership, I've been doing research online and found that round trip tickets are indeed dropping quite a bit. Most coast to coast round trip tickets are at $300 or less! Now you can fly for as low as $236 through American Airlines for example. Fares up and down the west coast average $180 or less. Many others are matching this fare or offering better deals.

Try Orbitz and Travelocity for low fares.

Now is the time to shop for those great prices! And don't forget to make your reservations for your hotel room as well as they are going fast.

Caffeine could cure cancer

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Though it's no Jolt Cola, green tea has been found to be remarkably effective as a treatment for skin cancers in mice, and scientists hope that caffeine may soon be used to help kill these harmful cells in humans. Though previous studies have shown injesting caffeine can also combat skin cancer, there are doubts to whether the amount needed is suitable for human consumption.
"Whether you can give enough orally to be effective in humans is not known," Allan Conney, researcher at Rutgers University in New Jersey, says."Whether people could ingest that amount without becoming hyperactive is also a real question mark."

Shark fin DNA test "conservation breakthrough"

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Now regulatory bodies can tell if endangered sharks are on the menu. Dried shark fins look puzzlingly similar, and even experts can't always tell if one has come from a protected species. Now the Wildlife Conservation Society and Nova Southeastern University
have developed a special test to identify 10 threated types of sharks by the DNA left in the fin. Cursory tests in a Hong Kong fish market showed a fifth of the fins tested were mislabled. This will ultimatly make it simpler to prove the impact of fisheries on endagered species.

White Bear Hunting Banned

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

While I had recently run across mention of a rarely seen variety of ursine known as the glacier bear in Lynn Schooler's book The Blue Bear, I wasn't expecting actual photos of one to be making the news this week. Thanks to photographer Pat Costello and the photos he took of the Spirit Bear, unusually fast action was taken by the Alaskan Game Board to ban any hunting of said bear in the Juneau region. Additional information can be found at the Juneau Bears site, which has a number of outbound links currently connected to the story.
